Over two hours later, the 22 GB Steam download is still going. I don't think it ever hit double-digit MB/s again. It's been hovering around the 2-3 MB/s range.

My friends are - as always - are also not experiencing any of these issues on separate providers.

I called Vodafone, and it unfortunately wasn't very productive. They're wanting to send a new modem and have a technician set it up, but I don't think much will come of it.

If there's no improvement, I'll just deal with it and hope that Chorus doesn't take too long.

Haha, I work for neither of them unfortunately. The Spark VDSL is provided by the job of someone else in the house.

Or fortunately depending on how you look at it.. lol.

So are you still seeing similar results to @Kodiack over your VDSL connection?

Steam is still <5MB/s and the Digital Foundry downloads are all over the show, going from 5MB/s to sitting at 0 for 20s.

Thanks. Doesn't feel like a fibreX issue in this case then.

Indeed, that's a good thing at least. BTW, @Djmixerdomo, did you have any downloads fail? I had to restart three times before the downloads actually made it to 100%.

I think due to the Steam summer sale the NZ caches are being overloaded - was getting 3kb/sec on Fibre peaking to around 2MB/sec. Changed to Australia (QLD) and am now seeing ~50+MB/sec.

Mobile broadband/wireless might be better in your situation.

Have you been given any timeframe for your fibre installation?

I think it is unfair to post any more of this here given it is clear that Steam is having issues.

Fair enough. It did pick up speed at one point in time and got to a bit over 30 MB/s, but for the most part it's been struggling to achieve 10 MB/s.

Even after switching servers, I still do not get any consistent improvement, unlike michaelmurfy. It's simply a miserable experience all around. Right now I'm sitting at anywhere from 300 KB/s up to ~12.5 MB/s.

Meanwhile, I asked a friend on gigabit fibre to download something and take a screenshot of their speeds. They said "it's pretty bad" and then posted this:

That's several dozen times faster than what I'm seeing. Vodafone is not blameless here. But I suppose I can stop complaining about dropping to speeds that are literally worse than dial-up.

EDIT
Friend's 5.5 GB download finished in less time than it took me to download 3.3 GB despite having a massive head start. They're definitely not experiencing any issues while Vodafone is. Not going to blame solely Steam on this one. Friend also started another download for the heck of it:

Yeah, plenty of evidence for me that my connection is at fault and not Steam. :\

Sorry, didn't see this earlier. Naw, haven't gotten a timeframe yet. The fibre order is still in review. Will hopefully know more next week. :)

I never said fibreX wasn't an issue. Just that there were other factors this time. Are they investigating it? Could be a routing issue or anything really.

Remember with steam, since steampipe content server numbers are way down.

In nz all we have now are akamai based chaches (which often do an amazing job)
Thing to remember about this is the load balancing algorithm etc has a habbit of throwing you back to vavles main servers in the worst case.

With sales caches always struggle to stay loaded with apporate content for 99% of people.
