Techie: Heres hoping TelstraClear and the other affected ISP's can resolve the rate limiting imposed by google/youtube making the tweak redundant.

It's not a "rate limiting imposed by Google"... Read about the problem here.

Isn't it?

Other international sites/services don't appear to be suffering the same problem, which would imply Telstraclear have enough international bandwidth to cope.

Why else would traffic from google/youtube servers in the US be slow and other servers in the US not slow?

For the record i've seen similar buffering-persistently problems with content providers other than Youtube - though whether they have the same root-cause or not, is a little hard for a consumer to figure...

The testing i did provided me with the opinion that Google use rate limiting technology to affect the delivery of youtube. Im happy to be proven wrong.
This is well within there rights and there capability to ratelimit the traffic but is annoying.

I respect and welcome your opinion.
Im looking forward to a interesting discussion over pizza and beer!

Finding it unusable today.

TelstraClear has become a joke if you ask me, this is ridiculous. I don't want to mess with DNS settings, if I do that, the support drones will say "change your dns settings" the next time I have some problem and have to call them with something totally unrelated. Besides, this shouldn't be the customer's problem!

We pay money to TelstraClear to provide us with connection to the internet, it's assumed that connection is at least ON PAR with similar offerings from their competitors, and at the moment, for possibly the most popular broadband using site on the net, TelstraClear's service is failing, miserably.

The only reason I havn't ditched is because it will be a hassle and expensive for me to do so (reasons unimportant). But there is no question that I won't be recommending T/Clear, and when/if I move house, I won't be getting T/Clear connected.

T/Clear for YouTube, is, rubbish.

Whether this is a Telstra problem or a Google/Youtube limit I think the worst thing is that Telstra haven't made an official post on this forum or a comment on their faults page.

Hi There, I want to add my 5 cents worth on TCL and YouTube. I Totally agree with Sleemanj and Peroski's posts in that this should not be a customer problem and require the need to tweak DNS settings etc. The basic facts are that YouTube has not worked well on TelstraClear for sometime now, hence this huge forum post. Be this from TCL "sweating" their cable network and or international bandwidth, or other routing factors is irrevant. We the customer pay for a service that should deliver a good quality of connectivity to International sites including YouTube, and we are not getting it. A constantly buffering and unuseable Youtube experience from a 10meg/sec cable access is plain laughable! I have recommended TCL to friends and configured quite a few TCL connections. I have stopped doing this now due to poor ISP performance. I will be connecting to Xtra ADSL2+ services next time I move, I'm also not moving right now as it is just too much of a pain to do it.
Come on TCL lift your game and get this sorted once and for all please!

For the last couple of days it's been really bad for me... Just unbelievably slow. Until TCL get this resolved somehow, perhaps they could put a disclaimer next to all their plans to let people know that this popular service doesn't work as expected on their network. And it's about time the competition made a point of this too! Maybe they could speed things up a bit by taking pot shots at TCL.

I recall a certain TCL ad mocking the buffering issues that other ISP's supposedly had..

Like lurker, I've found extremely poor YT performance over the last couple of days. Usually, you can just pause it and come back to it in a minute or two to get enough of a buffer, but last night it was completely unusable.

Other sites like Vimeo still work perfectly.

By changing my DNSmasq settings I now get brilliant performance, it's only on HD I encounter the occasional uffering issue.

Unfortunately unless you're got a router running DNSmasq it's not an option that most people can look at.

I don't have a router that does DNSmasq. So I changed the DNS in my router to the iinet one and got much better youtube performance compared to before.

Will there be unintended consequences using this DNS for everything instead of the TCL one, though?

The DNS will reply to your requests with a "local" IP and some services that use a CDN (Content Delivery Network) will forward replies to your network using the wrong path. This can cause all sorts of problems, most likely incomplete page loads.
