coffeebaron: ...setting the caller ID to ETSI FSK rather than Bellcore. This seems to send the caller ID string to phone in advance of 1st ring.

Aha, I wondered why the Caller ID doesn't display until after the first ring.  With iTalk it always used to display before the first ring.  Thanks for explaining that mystery Smile

maverick:

LOL...thanks Coffee...like the way you think, Phil, I think the correct ring pattern for NZ is: 60(.4/.2,.4/2) Close very Close but not quite right Laughing

Also ETSI FSK has a couple of issues so this will not be used at present

Out of the Telecom TNA 102:

(3) The nominal cadences designated DA 1-4 are as follows, each cadence being

repeated until the call is answered or abandoned:-

DA 1 (normal ringing cadence):

400 ms on, 200 ms off,

400 ms on, 2000 ms off,

and repeated.

Is it the 60 that precedes (.4/.2,..4/2) that I got wrong? I guess that can remain your trade secret if so desired.

Can understand ETSI FSK can have some issues, as it's not the NZ standard. But seems to work ok for my purposes, though I think it is ETSI FSK With PR(UK) that I was using.

Also sent an email through to your helpdesk this morning, as I still have one outstanding issue. My PAP2T periodically re-provisions, thus it wipes my Line 2 config. Anyway, no rush, I haven't found a reliable config for my italk service yet. Maybe I'll end up getting another VFX number instead.

What sort of problems are people experincing with iTalk still? I have used iTalk as my primary phone (I have no PSTN line) for the past 6 months and have found it rock solid. The last problem I had was the overloading of incoming trunks earlier in the year but apart from that I haven't had a single issue. I am running Asterisk as my PBX with Linksys SPA921 phones off it but the type of device shouldn't effect the stability of the system that much, it's just a matter of getting the right configuration.

My iTalk works fine on the standard Grandstream phone, and seems to work fine on the PAP2T by its self. The problem is VFX and iTalk on the same PAP2T. My guess is there are some global VFX settings that are incompatable with iTalk. I get calls not connecting properly, or I hang up, but phone I'm calling keeps ringing. Or calls don't come in etc.
With VFX on the PAP2T by itself, and iTalk on Grandstream phone - no problems!

sbiddle: What sort of problems are people experincing with iTalk still?

It was all covered in a lot of detail back on this page:

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=43&TopicId=9272&page_no=5

as well as the following page I think.  But to summarise, the main issues are:
===============================================================================
After 6 months of banging my head against a brick wall, I've had enough of iTalk.  These are the issues I've been putting up with for nearly all that time and none of them have been completely sorted.  On good days, the service doesn't miss a beat but there are too many bad days where one or more of the following things happen:

1)  Incoming callers receive: Beep-Beep-Beep-Beep (number doesn't exist)

2)  Incoming callers cannot hear me, even though I can hear them (thanks to Caller ID I can call them back, but I shouldn't have to)

3)  Voice Mail doesn't kick in when the phone is not answered (phone keeps ringing forever)

With iTalk it's not possible for customers to set the number of rings for Voice Mail to kick in and the server seems to wait for well over 10 rings before answering, if it bothers to answer at all!  By that stage, most people would have hung up.

Outgoing calls have never been a problem, only incoming ones, and Voice Mail.

===============================================================================

I've been using VFX for a week now, and it hasn't missed a beat.  Everything JUST WORKS!!!

I see no reason at all to go back to iTalk and will be cancelling my membership shortly.  At present VFX doesn't even cost anything in the way of monthly fees, only for the non-local calls you make.

But on my experience to date, I consider the $11.25 monthly fee (to be charged from next April), is a bargain considering all the services you get.  With Telecom, you would have to pay $42 (line rental) + $7.50 (Call Minder) + $3.95 (Caller ID) = $53.45 per month to get all these services, and that's not even mentioning 3-way Calling, Call Diversion or Call Waiting which all cost extra if you want them.  As for sending your voice mail messages by e-mail, forget it!

And I still didn't mention 5c/minute calling to any landline in NZ, at any time!

It's an unbeatable package so far as I'm aware.

I think all mine are _2_ wire. I'm going to get some _4_ wire from DSE at lunch time :)

Oddly enough, it passes thru to the phone (PAP2t -> fax -> phone) just fine :)

And yes, the NS-25 isn't a normal piece of kit. It was literally laying around at work, so I grabbed it (with permissions, of course). We got a load of Cisco gear when we got bought, so it was surplus to requirements.....

Now, I have to workout how to make the damn thing WORK. :)

OK, so Phil changed something (I'm guessing the sinusoidal -> trapizoid ring thing mentioned here), and the fax is all happy, with caller ID and everything. 4 phones ringing in a 80sqm house is, however, rather LOUD :)

FANTASTIC. 100% go here. Nothing outstanding except to tell Telstra to cut off the phoneline. I have 7 days left of the month, so....

Thanks for all your help - both people here, and especially Phil. Customer service taken to the next level(s).

Cheers

Nic

Quite possible, we will be doing things different so the Global setting we lock down make sure all our Services work correctly, so there may be some issues using the other service I obviously don't use italk myself...so will be interested in any info with both services running on the same device

I havent been reading this whole thread (and im not about to - its huge!), but I looked at VFX pricing and liked it, so just tried to sign up, but despite me saying i dont require hardware from them, they will not even give settings to get the service running on a softphone. Is this correct? Their English wasnt perfect, and neither is my hearing.

Hi Tony,

Yes rather large now...that will teach me to respond to a thread,

Yes i'm afraid thats correct at the moment, due a number of reasons in this thread but generally due to the fact the service is designed to work for all our offered services on the recommended hardware, softphones do not support the all the services we offer , we will be offering something in the future but for the first release to the Residential market it is only recommended hardware.

if you would like more detail feel free to email me with a contact number and perhaps I can give you a better feel and explaination

I DID, and once I relocate the office (to a larger room), I will again. Kinda.

PAP2T -> RJ12 spltter -> Fax machine (Brother MFC) -> uniden phone (powered)
splitter -> DORO cordless (2 handsets, but only one cable)

Result: LOUD :)

All the phones are powered, tho. Nothing is running off the phone line.

I have recieved the hardware today and had voice 2 unlocked and have success with my 2nd voip provider however right now I am downloading a large file ~4 GB so chewing up bandwidth I tried dialing a number using xnet and the audio was the worst I have heard could not make out voice at all very broken (this will be due to my settings)

I believe that has something to do with QoS but I must admit I know nothing about how to set this up I clicked on the top menu bar under application and gaming > QoSbut QoS is disabled with 8 pvc lines if I select setup tab > voice connection the voice is using PVC1 I think this may be the problem but as I say I know nothing about setting this up I dont want to have to reset the modem again etc...etc...

This is interesting, you have 3 calls and these have very high packet loss for 2 of these calls hence the bad quality these stats are reported by the router itself, it has inbuilt QOS and is on bydefault for the voice SIP module, generally we have not seen Packet loss at all when downloading large files over a 128/256 ADSL link , the voice quality has always been good because of the inbuilt QOS, my first thought would be what was the ADSL link doing at the time ? was it actually dropping packets at the time if you run a ping test to a destination what are your results ? also can you tell me if you dont mind what size ADSL connection do you have and with who ?, and lastly can you try the calls again just before the files finishes downlaoding then again straight after it has finished. This will give me a start point.

Intial quess is the ADSL link due ti the high nature of the packet loss

these are ping results to www.slingshot.co.nz (my ISP) my connection is 128/3500+ (unlimited) conection currently displayed on stats page 4800)

file still has a long way to download but have just this moment tried to dial same number again even worse as I say I dont think my router is set up for QoS (I have changed the IP addresses because I have network printers so my routers default IP is 10.121.10.1 and all other devices being 10.121.10.x)

hope this helps if not I will try another call in the morning if the download has finished (currently 95KB/Sec)

Edit:
PING www.slingshot.co.nz (202.180.68.145): 56 data bytes

I paused the download so I could do a shut down and then tried a ping test above and another voice call not much difference

I still believe that I may not have the correct settings as I used to get a better quality without QoS from a UK VOIP on my DG834G with supira SPA1001 (no Qos)

I was having the same problem during file downloads so I tried a router with QoS and found it didn't make any difference.  I believe this is because the various routers between me and the VFX server don't support QoS or 802.1p prioritisation of VoIP packets.

The way I have solved this problem is to use a router with Bandwidth Management.  This lets you select the Bandwidth Budget you want to use for various devices connected to your LAN.  In my case I have set prioritisation for the various devices according to their IP address.  My PAP2 ATA has the highest priority and other devices are not allowed to use more than 85% of the available downstream bandwidth.

Right now I am streaming music files yet I was able to make a call on VFX without any degradation whatsoever.

I think that some sort of bandwidth management device is what you will need to use to solve your problem.

Cheers,
Grant.
