The DNS will reply to your requests with a "local" IP and some services that use a CDN (Content Delivery Network) will forward replies to your network using the wrong path. This can cause all sorts of problems, most likely incomplete page loads.

Thanks. I've noticed already that anything that's coming of an Akamai mirror is slow or doesn't load at all so I've decided to go back to the TCL DNSes.

The graphs really do tell the story, don't they. Here's mine....

so reading the graph, well, I'm doing better than the average for TelstraClear, and TelstraClear is pretty much doing worse than, well, everybody.

Come on TelstraClear, get this sorted.

JonC: I don't have a router that does DNSmasq. So I changed the DNS in my router to the iinet one and got much better youtube performance compared to before.

Will there be unintended consequences using this DNS for everything instead of the TCL one, though?

Yes. You do not want to use this DNS server for all traffic. That's why the hack is really only suitable if you're running DNSmsaq so you can filter it by certain URL's.

I'm watching the speedtest and have no issues at all on 480p using the IINet DNS servers

The 2 dropped frams happened right at the start, there was no rebuffering.

Hi All - An Update - I have been in touch with Murray the Res Product Manager for Consumer Internet at TelstraClear today, and he advises that TCL are aware of this thread and are working with YouTube on a fix.

Hopefully they will sort it soon....!

Finally when youtube releases a statistical tool showing how crap telstraclear is, they decide perhaps something should be done.

But i'm not holding my breath for it.

Also, i went to someones house who had Telecom Big Time. He was showing me some videos and just says 'oh lets watch it in HD' and i see the the red buffer bar shoot across as it feeds from the youtube cache.

It'll be interesting to see what ISP's Rates.

You can see TelstraClear Rate around 1.00 Mbps with NZ average about 2.20 Mbps

Looking from an Orcon connection the rating is 2.8Mbps (above NZ Average) and just below the global averge of about 2.9Mbps

anyone got a Telecom or other ISP's Ratings?

For me (Telecom Big Time at home) it said ISP average was 2.7Mbps
