lchiu7: TCL's transparent proxy will break unblock-us if you're trying to use port 80 to view content (like Hulu) on a browser. But if you use a device like a Roku box, PS3, iPad, Android device etc. it works fine because those devices don't stream over port 80 and therefore are not affected by the transparent proxy.

Now, that's interesting... I just cancelled my Netflix subscription because I couldn't get decent enough performance through a VPN, and also thought that unblock-us didn't work on TCL. But I hadn't tried using the unblock-us DNS servers directly on the AppleTV or PS3. Will try that tonight to see if the performance is any better.

Works for me on a PS3, Google TV box and Galaxy Nexus. Also on an iPod touch.

The only device it won't work on for me is a Roku box because it has no way of setting static IP or DNS on its network settings.

Amanzi, I would be interested in hearing your experience with your Appletv and unblock-us.

I'm not very impressed with it after a weekend of tests, for me it's not only just SD quality but keeps freezing the video up buffering very often, even at early hours when the kids are watching cartoons, worse than with the VPNs. At least with the VPN services you get to change to a different server if one is playing up.

I've tried their two old and the two new unblock-us DNS servers, btw.

Also, I know Appletv3 is well capable of HD streaming as I can watch 720p from the local itunes store, although depending on the day it will stop one or 2 times during a movie to re-buffer, which I hope the 100Mbps DOCSIS3 can fix.

Well the good news is that, as lchiu7 said, unblock-us does work with TCL, on both the Apple TV and the PS3 — I tested both tonight successfully. The bad news is that I managed to get HD (or near HD) quality for just a brief spell of a couple minutes, but then would get really bad (lower than SD) quality and buffering every 30 seconds or so, effectively unwatchable.

Speed tests to various locations in the States tonight were between 4 and 6 Mbps and latency of 180 to 360 ms, so I'm guessing that DOCSIS3 isn't going to help here. Time to give up on Netflix (or TCL).

The problem is that TelstraClear performance in the evenings has been terrible. I tried watching a couple of movie trailers tonight using My Trailers for Media Center and the thing was stop-start all the time. You might want to test HD streaming during the day to see if it works...

International performance had been terrible lately so that streaming is an exercise in futility.

15Mbs is plenty to access content at the moment. I hope they do something about it soon.

It's been terrible. TCL - are you watching this thread? I haven't had my new modem installed yet but I am in no hurry since it won't really make any difference to my international viewing experience.

Can anyone confirm that the extra capacity has been added? I want to move to the 100Mbit connection but not if my international speed isn't going to get past 10Mbit.

What's even more depressing is the local speed. Unless the speedtest is routing via the US (the TCL one should not be) then there's a problem for sure.

My local speed to TelstraClear servers are fine:

The problem is when it gets out of the TelstraClear network. Who is to say the other providers have enough bandwidth? For example the AKL speedtest was to Vodafone servers. The speedtest to the Geekzone server (colocated at Datacom AKL) goes through Orcon:

Really, where does it end counting as a TelstraClear problem? Remember, there are many providers out there, and packets go through many different networks. Speedtests, while a good indication, are not the whole truth.

Yep, I have to agree.

I was switched to the 100Mbps service two weeks ago. My router is only capable of 50Mbps which I consistently get to speedtest servers within New Zealand, but if I try overseas I struggle to get 10Mbps.

I regularly download material from overseas, since upgrading from TC's 15Mbps service I have not seen any real increase in international speed.

Come on TC, when are we going to see some improvement?
