Darn, that is sooo interesting! I've been on the net since having to use Lynx to navigate and no such thing as web browsers and I didn't know that isps bought throughput, not data amounts. I had wondered how on earth xnet could afford all that download for the torrent plan members. Suddenly it all makes sense.

Thanks for the great explanation!

One solution (perhaps what they are going for) is to let torrenters leave out of frustration, so speeds improve, so there will be a natural equalibrium where speed is acceptable to the people that stay.  Also, word will get out that their torrent plan is no use so people are unlikely to join it.

Note that XNet does not advertise.  Yes, the torrent plan is an option on their web site, but they do not actively advertise like the others (Orcon, Xtra, Clear, Slingshot, etc.).  So they would not be getting that many people joining up all the time.  It is purely word of mouth, and at the moment the word is not good.

They said it will not take long before things will improve, I am sure it will improve very soon now that torrenters are starting to leave.

(I'm not complaining, just adding another viewpoint.)

I've heard from inside that they are still signing up to 50 peeps a day! hard to believe but I trust my source. Not sure how many are leaving though.

The problem with torrents is that it doesn't matter how much capacity you add it will all get gobbled up instantly

And that is why torrenters have been moved to a time slot when everybody else is asleep. Ideally hehe.

Far from everybody! :-p

Well I left xnet back around the end first quarter of this year due to their on going international performance problems (this was before the torrent plan).  I think I'd been a customer for almost 8-10 months or so.  The torrent plan to me sounded like a terrible idea that was bound to destroy any quality of service for normal mid to late night users.  If you dug up some of my posts from around that time both here and on gameplanet you'll probably find some "I told you so" moments.

I really wanted to continue liking Xnet and stay with them as I'd been a happy customer for many months.  I respected their no contract pay per gb plans.  However near the end I'd also been an unhappy customer for the last several months and it was clear their no management of p2p traffic was going to destroy the service for gamers (international servers) and moderate users.

I would say I used to recommend xnet quite a lot to my friends, family and workmates.  I doubt I would recommend them to anyone any time soon.

I don't know how they can be happy with the damage to their reputation or brand and the strong negative word of mouth about them now.

Bye XNET,  Hello Slingshot!

Contacted XNET with speed concerns last week.  They made me do all sorts of speed tests and traces - never acknowledging the current bandwidth issues.  I did this for them - but told them my concerns about the Torrent plan.  The sent me a standard cut/paste excuse - and a link to the CEO's "roadmap" ???  Like I care???

Signed up with Slingshot on Monday lunchtime using the online process.  Had my account activated within 24 hours.

Set my 1Gig download going at 1am in the morning.

IT COMPLETED BEFORE 3am!!!!   (This is the file that couldn't reach 80Meg in 6 hours via XNET)

No off-peak problems here.... why are you still with XNET?

Switching to Slingshot right now probably wasn't the greatest move, did you miss all the negative posts about Slingshot's service atm?

I joined the gym a few months ago. I was put on a waiting list as I was told they had too many members and couldn't guarrantee a quality service (i.e. small wait times to use equipment) to their existing members if they didn't enforce a limit.

Perhaps Xnet and other ISP's should try thinking like this, of course that would mean less profit, it'll never happen...

Exactly right. Small and cheap ISP`s like Xnet absolutely need oversubscription in order to be profitable. As soon as their customers are happy, their owners are not. You get what you pay for.

I'm just hoping that they change the off peak data times. Many people want to use the internet before 8am. I tried to get a 2 meg .exe file from sourceforge at 7.30am and it took 5 minutes to complete.
