Ultrafast HFC Max is 1000/100. 1000/500 is a Fibre Max.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Yep. And 100 up isn't really an issue, apart from the first time you use a cloud backup like Backblaze. YOu have just gotta let the PC stay on, although the decent cloud backups cache and work with up and down time. You can try it (Backblaze) for a month for free using this link (disclaimer - if you buy it, I get another month, but I am always two+ years paid up in advance so not concerned either way). I've found them excellent and been a customer since 2017. https://secure.backblaze.com/r/01gmbj

I had the HFC 200/10  and they (the person explaining what the new service would be when they changed the modem) told me I would be going on "1000/500 unlimited data" plan.   Account now says Ultrafast HFC Max. I am not sure I am on the "up to 1000/500" - consistent 650Mbps/103Mbps from olkla speedtest with Vodafone Wellington server but just letting it all settle before I ring to check I am on the promised profile.

Are you testing over Wifi or Ethernet cable?

Ethernet.

Cat 5E 15meters length from Ultrahub/router to POE ( needed for POE security camera) switch then short Cat 6 patch cable. Same speeds with out POE switch.

Also thanks for the info regarding 500 up people. Clearly the person on the phone was not clear that I was retaining HFC. Happy though with 100 up and my Chorus fibre ONT is sitting under the computer ready for when Vodafone pull the plug on HFC or the price is not competitive anymore.

Hi @Tatou, I was "upgraded/migrated" in February from the old HFC cable and T-Box, and was told prior to the upgrade that I would be on 1000/500 plan, I actually get approx 500/100, I'm on an ethernet connection to the router.  I don't really mind except for the selling part which doesn't seem to have been correct.

From a Voda pdf on UltrafastHFC

"Actual user speeds will vary and are affected by various factors including how you’re
connected to the internet (using a Gigabit Ethernet cable is better than WiFi, which
could have a large impact on speed), the hardware and software used, number of
devices connected, time of day, and where the data is downloaded from. In good
conditions, we expect you’ll get download speeds of 700-900 Mbps and upload
speeds of 90-95 on our HFC Max plan."

I'm not sure there is a faster plan on the HFC platform from Vodafone.

I know that "up to 1000" is marketing hype and actual speed is lower but I am not getting over 700Mbp. I am assuming that as less and less people are on the HFC then speed for the remaining people will approach that in "good" conditions :-).

When I can still myself I will ring to make sure the profile is correct but speed up or down is not an issue that affects the way I use the internet. Also the other half has got used to the new TV control and Menu but still pines for the old recording ability for all programmes.

On another matter I have been checking the HFC connections in the neighbourhood during my exercise and there are a lot of Chorus connections going up ( they had a blitz on free install) and the HFC connections appear to be a lot less.

You should expect:

A phone call to discuss what the future service should consist of

i.e do you still want phone (which will be VOIP) so the phone or the phone wiring you currently use will plug into the new Ultrahub ( router) you will be supplied with. ( You can get VOIP with another party as has been mentioned in this forum)

i.e are you using SKY services through Vodafone and do you want to continue such as with Sky Starter and Sky Entertainment

Ask what the speed will be and request 1000/100 if it is not offered

You will get Unlimited data (needed for the Vodafone TV in any event).

They should tell you the total cost

On the day the techo turns up they will want to know where you want the modem and Ultrahub. I had two modems - one for internet ( with my own router with wifi connected to it- it was in the center of the house ) and one for the Tbox ( in a room at the front of the house). This meant I had two coaxial cables into the house from the grey box. I had to decide where the Ultrahub and modem were going. I put them where the Internet modem was because of Wifi distribution.

If you put them other than by new TV box then you will have to use wifi or run an ethernet cable from the Ultrahub to run the new TV box.

We had a cordless phone which plugged into the old telecom circuit in the house ( the Vodafone cable spliced into that circuit somewhere). However the telephone jack by the place I decided to place the modem and Ultrahub was not working and techo said that meant I couldn't have the phone unless I plugged the phone base into the Ultrahub direct. I did this and the phone sits not far from the Ultrahub and modem. An ethernet cable I ran under the house and up into the room with the TV connects to the new TV box from the Ultrahub.

No problem. I forgot to add.

If you currently have a static IP address then you will loose that. (I think you can pay extra to get one).

I wanted to use my own router but the tech guy said he had to install the Ultrahub but what I did after he left was up to me (wink).

In any event because I wanted to keep my phone service with Vodafone ( I had to plug the cordless phone into the Ultrahub) I had to use the Ultrahub as the router.

He got the TV working via Wifi to the TV box as the ethernet cable I had installed did not work. I replaced the cable that afternoon and configured the new TVbox to use Ethernet. TV works OK

Hope it all works out OK

Ultrafast HFC confusion. I note in the Hamish summary states that "Unlimited Ultrafast HFC (with new DSC3.1 modem if required) offering

download speeds of up to 700-900 Mbps, and upload speed of up to 90-95Mbps in good conditions. I may have misread comments that if you

already have DOCSIS 3.1 as some have the "Fibre 200" plan,  that people without a fibre plan are getting upgraded to the fastest fibre speed, while loyal early adopters do not.

Can someone enlighten me please.?

I have been with Chello/Saturn/Telstraclear/Vodafone since the very beginning of cable in Wellington.

When I received the phone call to discuss the change over of the Tbox there was no discussion of DOCSIS 3.1 modem vs the old modem or fiber plan vs non fibre plan.  I had the old modem though.

The person just said the new service would be Unlimited data and 1000/500 i.e HFC Unlimited Max. Now the 500 was obviously a mistake.

The main discussion was about the Sky TV through Vodafone and the landline. I paid no more for the new data/speed than I was paying before.

My original plan was 200/2 with 300gig (if I recall right).

I mentioned I had Chorus installed and was trying to decide whether to stay with Vodafone or move to Chorus.

The deal they give me was a lot cheaper than going to Chorus (@1000/500 -plus getting Vodafone TV box and 2 Sky packages and 3rd party VOIP). My only real loss was that I had to flag away my own router to retain Vodafone VOIP. As I said before the upload speed was not really an issue.

OIC. Well there does seem to be some confusion. I guess all will be revealed when the time comes for the changeover.

Like you, we have been on Cable with the various providers for many years. I lost a lot of hair using the TBox with all the early problems.

Greets all, been a long time since coming back to the geekzone, but very happy after reading this thread on the up-coming changes with the decommissioning of the Tbox. Have been on the cable since the good old Chello days, so hoping this change over goes well. From the thread at least I’ve worked out that I need to make some decisions around phone and whether to keep a land line as such or just default over to all the cellphones we have in the house. The other side with the Tbox to VTV and modem change, I’m sure the kids will appreciate as we only get 50Mbs down at the mo, no idea what plan I’m on, but it has done us well overall. Hoping we don’t get any of the issues others have had, so fingers crossed.

Hi, sorry all for being absent from the chat for a couple of weeks. There are a number of changes underway at Vodafone and so I've had to focus on other matters for a bit...

We are upgrading all HFC customers to DOCSIS 3.1 and Ultrafast Unlimited HFC so everyone will be on the fastest possible plan and have access to the latest services from Vodaofne.

The 700 - 900 Mbps is "in good conditions".   Some homes may not have ideal connections, so please contact us if you're not getting at least 700 Mbps down.  Alternatively send me a DM and I'll get someone to investigate.

In terms of the HFC network generally:

- This programme of work represents a significant investment in upgrading the HFC network and upgrading all customer modems to be fully DOCSIS3.1 compliant.  This is world-class HFC and offer the best internet connection speed to price value in NZ.

-  After the retirement of the Tbox platform, we will be "re-farming" the cable spectrum bandwidth used for Tbox and this will represent another significant boost to the HFC network performance.  This will occur once we've upgraded the last Tbox customer.  We are targeting having this programme completed by July.
