"I am being excluded too from purchasing outright instore".

My goodness. Can't people order online on Friday and wait until it arrives on Tuesday? Is this the end of the world?

Not happy tonight MF?

Anyways, what people are saying effectively, from what i can gather from this rather long discussion; is that they feel they aren't being treated equally with their post-paid (on account) buddies.

In some ways i can understand, but I can also understand if they were saying

"well, we're going to only allow people that are signing up on contracts to come on and get them on Friday, so we can ensure that those signing up to new contracts, get their phones the same day"

This sort of makes sense.. but thats just a scenario i thought of in my head.

From what Paul is saying, it's to keep a tight lid on the stock so it stays in NZ (mostly)

Correct me if im wrong.

Satch:
So so happy for you.  Yay!

But I am one of those existing customers who simply wish to upgrade my handset and remain on the VF network.  I'm being excluded too from purchasing outright instore, and I don't think that is overly fair.  As I said before, it is all about managing expectations.

Oh and I'm impatient too.  That is my right, and for being so I'll take my business elsewhere (at a greater inconvenience).

Thanks for the enthusiasm...

I'm not saying that it's not an inconvenience to those valid VF customers that want to legitimately purchase the phone to continue to use on VF, like you and me. My comments weren't directed at people like you - VF customers wanting to continue being so (perhaps I wasn't clear enough on that).

Apologies

Does anyone think the VF stores will be opening early or just normal time etc? Will there be anyway to find out what locations have how many phones? As i think there will be a shortage in Tauranga as they probably won't get any in? What do you think?

Nothing to do with that. I am just asking if this is something that is so life changing that ordering on-line is not an acceptable option.

All I can ascertain is that you have missed the point completely.

Ok, I apologise too for biting.  I agree with your point completely.  But I'm just a simple VF customer wanting to buy a new phone too keep on the VF network, and have it for the weekend to play around with it :)

This will be my first iPhone so weekend playtime is important!

One other factor to consider here is that Vodafone are not the only party involved here.

You may or may not be aware of the reach of Apple's control over every minute detail of a product such as the iPhone. So feel free to spread the love around Wink

Cut the guys some slack, i'm sure there's some pretty comprehensive contractual obligations at play here.

Myself, I don't mind ordering online and waiting a couple of days for it to turn up. I would have liked to get my hands on one on launch day but the world isn't ending if I don't.

From some comments above I can see that some people may think that loyal VF customers are those on account. Which is simply not the case. I have been a loyal VF prepay customer since I was young. And to say that just because we aren't tied to a contract doesn't mean that we aren't loyal but I am aware that prepay customers do have more of an option to switch to other networks.

I disagree that VF won't sell iPhones w/o a plan on the shop floor during launch day but do respect VF for the reasons why and their final decision.

Oh, in that case I feel sorry for VF then.  Especially when other resellers in NZ are not tied down in the same fashion (i.e. can sell the 3GS from day one outright).  Apple may not be being fair on VF by singling them out.

Ah! There you go. Someone who sounded more logical now.

If apple was that worried about people shipping them overseas then magnum mac wouldn't be selling them outright.

As far as i'm aware, Vodafone are the sole reseller, either through their own retail stores, or via their approved retailers, which i'd assume are under the same obligations as Vodafone stores.

Ok, I'm going to try and make this my last post on the subject, as I'm now getting bored with it and am definitely getting no where...

Personally I didn't mean that only on account customers are loyal customers.  My reasoning is around why VF won't sell handsets outright instore to any VF customers who are simply upgrading their handsets and using them on the VF network.  I'd just rather not wait several more days to receive my new iPhone and have to pay courier costs to get it when I can practically walk across the road and pick one up on Friday.

Iduncan - you'll find that both Magnum Mac and PlayTech will also have the iPhone 3GS for sale on Friday.  And they are able to sell it outright as an instore purchase.
