Well I have been a staunch supporter and user of TCL since I moved to my current house - over 5 years now. And I regularly spend > $200 each month with them. But this YT stuff is just unacceptable and I think as soon as cabinetisation comes to my area I think I am going to jump ship with all services.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Can someone post DNSmasq settings that the've found to work?

I saw some settings earlier in this thread with OpenDNS servers, but I didn't get any performance improvement when I tried them.

As an aside, has anyone else noticed TCL's transparent cache performance getting worse over the last week or so? I'm finding that the pages it is serving me are increasingly stale, and I'm having to force reload more and more.

On a side note - For a technology based forum, the forum software has got to be one of the worst I've ever seen. OSX + Safari = bad experience on this forum.

How do you know that TCL isn't working on a fix with Google?

You're right, we don't know - and that's part of the problem.  There are at least a dozen ways that TCL could communicate with its users that it's doing so, including posting on this forum or their own web-site, but there's been no official acknowledgement that there's even a problem that I can remember.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Outside of the IDG stable (national) and the ChCh and Wellington papers, there wouldn't be much interest. As it happens, I passed on information to Juha Sarinen (Computerworld) and Tom Pullar-Strecker (Dominion), a couple of days ago. Whether they'll do anything is another matter. A lot of the issues are pretty technical and nerdy, and it would require a fair bit of work to turn it into a good consumer story. There will be easier stories to write with deadlines looming.  And while we think it's a big deal, in the real world, people getting poor YouTube performance on TCL get trumped by XT network woes.

Correct. The problem is more commercial than technical though. just go back to my blog post. It's all about traffic, peering, and money. Nothing much technicians can do at this point.

You're right that there are many ways they could communicate with customers facing this problem. But for all I know they have decided not to.

I know a bit more of the story but unfortunately is not something I am free to talk about. But go back to my blog post, read it and you will see the problem up there...

It would help a lot if you could open a new thread in the appropriate forum with a description of the problems you found. Because this would be off topic here and because if you don't tell us, then they won't be fixed.

In Upper Hutt this morning the couple of clips i've watched were okay.
Yesterday I was suffering from bad stutter though.

Here's some tests from Today, note it's a Linux box and not a stunner - but quite capable of running Youtube clips smoothly:

There is probably a case for someone to accuse TCL of misrepresenting the quality of their broadband services by constantly reporting "No Known Issues" on the TCL website status page. We have written confirmation in this thread from several months ago, that TCL staff are aware of both this thread and the YouTube performance issues. This issue has been reported to the TCL service-desk by multiple participants of this thread.

Most times when I experience problems with TCL, the Status page makes not mention of it, even when numerous people are affected.

TelstraClear:  Either report your service status's honestly to NZ consumers and your customers, or remove the worthless status page. You are exposing yourself to claims of misrepresentation.

Mauricio thanks for referral back to you Blog post on this issue. The nub of issue all becomes a lot clearer now, with what appears to be a commercial stand-off between Google/YouTube and TCL around peering and caching.

Of note is Youtube performance is not bad today being a Saturday when the majority of TCL's business customer base are not contending with Res custy's for the stretched International bandwidth that is carrying TCL Youtube traffic. TCL's apparent disinterest in Peering also seems to show up in the poor response times of the NZ Met Service website, I think that is housed at CityLink in Wellie. With TCL not peering with/at WIX, traffic to the Metservice.co.nz site from TCL customers go via the USA last time I checked.

Could be a case under the Consumer Guarantees Act for non delivery of a component of a Telecommunication Services? A Tricky one though!

Peter Griffin and Radio NZ National may also want to pick this up on the "This way up" consumer show. Agree Media Pressure from a groundswell of Customers is the key to fixing this one. If that don't work the final solution - is off to Xtra ADLS2+ and BigTime.
