It's super useful - e.g. I have an Apple Watch Ultra and frequently take it out without my phone. Having the eSim on it completely changes its utility, especially if I want to do a long ride/run and be confident I can be contacted and/or found when necessary. At the moment I do without the phone primarily for sports activities, but increasingly I find it liberating to leave the phone behind for normal life stuff. With mobile data, the Watch can do most of the stuff I need while avoiding the issues of phone addiction/scrolling. I can do calls, email, messages, navigation, and just don't have access to socials. I'm with One NZ and the marginal additional difference to get the Watch on my contract is well worth it.

alasta: What is your use case for this? I would have thought that anyone with a sports watch would also have a phone?

Which they may not be the account payer for, or they do not want to have them sharing the same number like it appears happens when you connect them onto the same plan as a mobile phone.

Sorry, I should have been clear that I was referring to the post about connecting the watch independently to one’s phone.

As a distance runner and open water swimmer I am very familiar with the general benefits of cellular connectivity in a sports watch. It’s fantastic to have the piece of mind that I can call for help if I get stranded or have an accident.

No, I should have read more carefully - I feel like an idiot now explaining what was obvious :-)

I don't think it was unwise to restate this - as people read through these threads the reasons for cellular usage on a watch get somewhat lost.

I have similar uses for mine and feel that the additional $5 a month is more than acceptable for me to be able to go off on my mountain bike and still be contactable or to accidentally leave my iPhone at home and simply use my AWU for everything I need.
