mercutio: but even with adsl on peak issues have seen even with multiple connections, cable used to be fine for getting full speed on 15 megabit with multiple connections.  is it going to stay the same with 100 megabit?

I managed to get full speed when downloading torrents from vodo.net - about 25 torrents and the 100 Mbps were all used up. Obviously burstable.

As for browsing, yes it's a big difference from downloading single threads. Browsers will try and download from multiple sources at the same time, and in some cases even pipeline http connections (using SPDY for example).

The whole speed test thing is a myth. Tests show one thing, real life use is different.

i wonder if it's window size related.

you can set a bigger window size with an elevated command prompt nad

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=experimental

i'm trying to download something off vodo.net to check out my adsl speeds, and it's only doing 800k/sec. with the top guy sending to me at 155k/sec.

i suppose that's why you needed 25.

did you notice a difference in web browsing speed?

We have no idea if the "top guy" is limited on his side. That's the beauty of torrent, you get to use the max speed because you get multiple sources. If you go for some of the most downloaded videos (such as Yes Men), set no limits to connections and speed then you will get full speed. If you have just one seed then obviously the speed will not benefit at all.

Browsing is a hit and miss. I think the proxy inserts itself too much.

Yeh, he could be.  It's still downloading, it's up to 1.5MB/sec.  with 42 seeds and 2 peers.

I've long suspected the telstraclear proxy of getting in the way.  Not that proxying is bad.

I remember years ago avoiding browsing the net during peak time on cable because it wasn't snappy enough, and yet torrents would download fine.

I tend myself towards wanting to download specific things, and get them asap.  So "lots of downloads going fast" doesn't mean much to me.  It's not a race to download the internet!

Real world speed tests I suppose are things like how long did it take Diablo 3 to download?  I wonder if anyone on 100megabit cable downloaded it?  Did it go full speed?

Hi everyone.

At the end of last week, TelstraClear bought substantial extra international capacity for its network and some customers will be noticing an improved Internet experience. Please remember that there are many factors that can impact on Internet speeds and you may not always notice a difference. Consumer NZ has a good backgrounder to this here: http://www.consumerspeedtest.org.nz/about.php

We are aware that some customers, particularly those in the Bay of Plenty and parts of Waikato, have noticed little, if any, change. We are working with our wholesaler to identify the cause of these congestion problems and to have them resolved as soon as possible.

If you are in other parts of the country and are experiencing slower speeds than you usually get please log a fault so that we can investigate. Information that is helpful when logging a fault includes the results of the TelstraClear speedtest at http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/customer-zone/speedtest/

If you log a fault, it will help us track the problem and resolve it if you can provide us with good information. Please let us know what websites you are finding slow to load and what time you tried accessing them. Please also keep a note of your fault ticket number and update us with other sites that you find are slow to load or do not load at all. When you log a fault you will be given an email address that you can send this extra information to.
Note that the results of other speedtest sites do not help us identify problems. This is because there are too many variables involved (as noted in the Consumer NZ backgrounder) for the results to have any meaning. For example, how many others are accessing that test site when you are, and the different servers and networks routes that can be causing bottlenecks between your machine and the speedtest site.

Hope this is useful. Gary

I have had terrible speeds with Netflix lately and not on a VPN. I will try again later to see if it's better.

I have to admit I watched 2 Netflix movies this last weekend using a VPN through HMA and was getting really good streaming speeds. It didn't freeze buffering up and quality was close to HD if not HD. So whatever you TCL guys did it seems to have work for me.

I hope it can stay that way :-)

Cheers
Carlos

I have just been upgraded. My router is a older DLINK DIR-615 flashed with DD-WRT.

Speedtest to TCL provides the following data

Download Speed: 90064 kbps (11258 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 9362 kbps (1170.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 18 ms
(This is from Wellington to the Auckland server)

This is fine.

But speedtest to the Auckland (WXC) server shows this

And to the US West Coast

I can understand the slow speed to the US (even on a Saturday morning) but the Auckland result is a bit inexplicable given that the test directly to TCL's servers almost hits the rated speed.

Do we know if the WxC links have enough capacity at the moment? Is their test server limited in any way? Do we know how the traffic from TCL to WxC routes? It could be anything really...

Well you're in Wellington. What do you get to ChCH?

This is what I am getting

their speed test server appears to be on more than 100 megabit connectivity... the traffic from tcl to wxc or within tcl is an unknown.  telstraclear aren't peering on ape.  wxc server is definitely fast over ape.

fwiw telstraclear's speed test on non-telstraclear is overshooting on my dsl speed showing impossibly higher numbers.

auckland and los angeles look kind of typical for cable connections, there appears to be some kind of problem getting consistently high speeds without using multiple connections.

My 100Mbps service is actually being limited to 25Mbps. This happened since the change of modems (the model I had here never went into production) and there was some confusion in provisioning on the new MAC.

This explains an iTunes movie downloading taking 45 minutes instead of the usual ten minutes last weekend...

Asked Gary to have it checked, will report later.

I know that TCL don't peer at the WIX. Not sure about APE.

But I guess it's all down to real world speeds rather than speed tests. Not sure it should have improved the situation but Netflix streaming seemed better after the upgrade and I'm not using a VPN.
