peteremcc: I think we should all turn up to the launches and queue as originally planned, but when they open the doors we just carry on standing there, as if we're there for something else. Then go home after about 10 minutes! :)

Not a bad idea. I was planning on stopping by the store at midnight anyways, just to see how many people line up.

I just can not see the reasoning for such prices, no one in their right mind would consider a $250 per month plan (Remember i said in their right mind!)  Disapointed as was intending to palm my N95 to the other half and get the Iphone, but thats a no go now..

and if any media turn up to cover the queue, it would be hilarious if hardly anyone there was actually planning to buy one!

freitasm: And here comes the mainstream media:

IDC telecommunications market analyst Tim Shepheard said the phone was "not overly priced".

He said the plan and cost of the handset was "comparable" to other plans in New Zealand, which made it expensive internationally.

The $80/month plan was "no more" than other plans and though that made the handset more expensive, $549 was "not unreasonable" for the iPhone, Mr Shepheard said.

Where is this "analyst" living? There are plans of $49/month for 1 GB - on Vodafone! Charging $250 for the same GB is outrageous.

Does the $49/1GB plan include 600 minutes, 600 TXTs, and a $780 hardware subsidy?

Comments are my own, don't blame my employer...

That's a brilliant "flash-mob'-esque idea. If I was in a main centre I'd be there!

Even better, tip a member of the press to the activity and get it to run front page!

Does that $49 / month include 600 minutes and 600 texts per month?  On YouChoose, a 600 minute + 600 text plan comes out at $237.90 per month.  That is without the 1GB data, so it seems comparable to me.  Please let us know if you can find a comparable plan for cheaper in NZ.

Kyanar:
Geektastic: They will sell them all.

This is a country where people won't spend money heating their homes but would happily buy beer and new cellphones ad infinitum!!

Have you seen the price of firewood and LPG?  It's probably because it's cheaper to use the artificial warmth of beer and seven Pentiums than it is to light the fire ;)

Well, I can't say I'm surprised out this, and I in fact predicted that $199 would be the most expensive plan.  We may as well get over it, Vodafone is as bollocks as Telecom ever was (and weirdly enough, I get better service and pricing from Telecom than Vodafone would even consider.  Go figure!)

Err - using fire is a bit 18th Century, don't you think?! Try heatpumps and double glazing!

Now that is a brilliant idea! If it wasn't a 200 km round trip to the nearest store that will be open at midnight (now costing $8 billion in fuel!) I would do that for sure!

Views from NZ Herald web readers. Needless to say, Vodafone isn't popular!

Heat pumps?  Thanks, but the power bill is bad enough now.  I don't want to add a few more thousand to it (damn you Mercury!)

And I can't double glaze someone else's house, even if I did happen to have a few thousand spare dollars one week (which I don't, ever) to do so.

This is what O2 are offering customers in the UK, by way of a comparison:

iPhone 3G is now free on selected Pay Monthly tariffs*

With fast 3G wireless technology, Maps with GPS and the new Apple Store, iPhone 3G puts even more amazing features in your hands. And just like the original iPhone, it combines three products in one - a revolutionary phone, a widescreen iPod, and a breakthrough Internet device with rich HTML email and full web browsing, iPhone 3G. It redefines what a mobile can do - again.

*Best of all, the new 8GB iPhone won't cost you a penny on our £45 and £75 tariffs. And it's just £99 on our £35 tariff and new £30 tariff.

If you'd prefer the 16GB version, it's free on our £75 tariff. Then you'll just pay £59 with the £45 tariff and £159 on our £30 and £35 tariffs.

All tariffs include unlimited browsing on your iPhone, unlimited Wi-Fi access, visual voicemail and reduced roaming rates with our International Traveller Service and are subject to a minimum term contract of 18 months.

I'm in for the "flash-mob" idea!

- Go in the store;
- Get their staff to show you all the options to buy it and etc;
- Say "it's too expensive, no thanks" and walk out;

Who's in? I'm doing this in Auckland.

TheBartender:I am not surpised by these high prices...

This is raw economics, supply and demand stuff...
While there is to much demand, and limited supply, the price can be set high...its just that simple.

It would be that simple in a competitive market. In a non-competitive market like this they charge what the market will bear - i.e. overly-inflated prices. It'll be interesting to see if these prices are indeed what the market will bear. (Sounds like it won't be amongst GZers!)

Can anyone tell me if they know hwo the pre-pay blocking will work?

I mean, if I had a prepay SIM that's 2 years or so old, the SIM itself won't be blocked from use in the iPhone unless the iPhone is porgrammed to block prepay SIMs, right?

I saw something mentioned about sub-SIM blocking, can someone explain what that is?

Cheers.
