edit: and no, you won't find details here until 10.00am tomorrow.

What DO people actually want to see? Be good to hear a few ideas before they're coloured by the actual plans themselves.

9 1/2 hours. 1 more sleep. Then a big part of the puzzle is answered.

What DO people want to see in a rate plan? There's been a lot of conjecture, but very little - I would like this:

No one has even stood up and said - "I need BestMates', or I need 2000 txts, or anything remotely approaching that. Surprising.

Well I was on a Treo with telecom last year and they had a plan for a gig for (iThink) 50 dollars for a gig.
Thats a bit steep but if they can beat that i would be happy.

With so much wifi around all we really need (myself at least) is a minimum plan 300mb or such... just for tweeting or email.

What would be great... I am already on account... if i could just add a data plan for 24 months because i love my plan. 600txts bestmate and 60 min its perfect.

I definitely want to be able to get a best mate and keep my TXT600 I currently have on You Choose.

There is no way i would sign to a new contract without some sort of text plan.

Would anyone take a new plan without a text plan (TXT600, TXT2000) attached?

NO! are kidding. I used to be a big texter but now that I have vodafone family i am not so much. but it is still vital to have txt 600.
SInce i have been on a plan though i have fallen in love with the idea of calling all the time

I don't know if it's to do with the iPhone but Vodafone sent a txt the other day announcing new internet data rates. From July 28th it's going to cost you $1 a day for 10MB of data (nothing a day if you don't use any that day). If you do o ver that it's going to be $1 per MB.
Phone 489 from your vodafone device for more info.

If vodafone has any brains they will create a standard (Iphone Plan) 3G Plan that allows for addons, my guess is that it will be $40 for 500MB a month with each additional MB $1 and anything else can be an addon eg 600 TXT and Best mates Added on. Most likely would be a minimum amount of free minutes. probley about 20 - 60

Iphone Cost $550 -$600
With addons being extra making the monthly phone bill about $60 - $70

Apple have stipulated that the 8GB iPhone will cost no more than $US199 in any country in which it is sold.

Some good thoughts there on the plans.

My feeling is that $40 is a bit on the low side, particularly with the $199 pricepoint. This represents a subsidy somewhere along the lines of ~$500 per device which is very high for New Zealand.

In Australia it's fairly typical to expect a free handset worth ~$600 - $700 with a A$49 24 month contract but we have never had anything like that here due to the lack of competition in the NZ markerplace. When I was in Aussie last month on Vodafone AU you received a free N95 for signing up on a 24month A$49 capped plan/prepay. If Vodafone are willing to offer such generous discounts for the 3G iPhone and a pricepoint somewhere around the $40 - $60 per month there should be a lot of people asking Vodafone why they have been ripped off for so long and why they are offering such poor value for money across the rest of the range.

Whatever Vodafone announce today will potentially represent be quite a fundamental change in their business model - no matter whether you love or hate Apple and the iPhone Steve Jobs certainly deserves credit for creating a fundamental shift in the mobile marketplace.

Is it possible that Vodafone will create a couple of plans (maybe three)? Perhaps a cheapest option and a further one which includes more internet use/calls?

Just taking a stab in the dark, but at $199NZ for an iPhone, I'm guessing a 24 month plan will be at least $49 a month, but possibly $59. Perhaps at $49 a month there will be the option to add 500 Mb of monthly data for another $10-20 a month?

$40 is low.

While it would be great to see something similar, Australia is a very different market to NZ. Vodafone have a strategy of being number one or number two in any marketplace they operate in, and are facing tough competition in Australia to achieve this. To put this in perspective, my partner's prepay bill in Aus was cheaper than my on account bill here a year or so ago. My on account bill in Aus is much less than my on account bill is here (although I don't pay them, it still rubs).

Steve Jobs turned the music industry on it's head, and when an iPhone was announced, I was equally excited by the fact that Apple would bring it's pricing ideas to bear on the marketplace, as I was by the hardware itself. It may take some time - especially with such a big player as Vodafone - but Apple has more charisma, more presence in consumers' minds, and are seen as the darling of the people that Vodafone once were.

I think thats pretty much spot on.

What i'd like to see is a build your own burger approach to iPhone, almost identical to what we have now in the you choose add on thingy but with added data allowances and the option of the $1/10mb for casual users.

I'd also like to see differing contract lengths which correspond to different amounts which vodafone will subsidise the phone (or indeed its overall cost.)

I think txt messaging has a much greater take up here than in other countries thanks to intense competition. And I think vodafone will not want to back down from telecom in this area, so there will have to be some plans with txt messaging or with the option too.

But I fear at the amazing 199 price point we won't see anything below $60, which would be fine for people with steady incomes but not so fine for uni students.
