Having same issue in Christchurch and yeah, it's like we've gone back to a year ago when we had the same issues. Been like this for a while now. Some videos are streaming fine though, not every video loads slowly. It's a bit random. But definitely just affecting particular videos, ie it doesn't waver during a video - if it's going to be slow it's slow all the way. Do popular videos get cached? DNS is correct and speed test to Wellington is 15.17Mbps/2Mbps, 13ms.

also, have been home most of the day and tried on and off throughout, no obvious changes to You Tube speed ..ie bad!

What plan are you on? Is this test to TelstraCleat test server link I posted?

Are you using WiFi for testing?

I watched 5 minutes of the above drag racing video at HD 720p and had no buffering issues at all at 10 to 9 this morning. I'm on T/C cable in Trentham Upper Hutt. Perhaps enough Geekzone users have watched it now for it to be buffered locally.

Yes, there's always the possibility something is not in the local (NZ) cache and until it's moved from overseas to local it can be like that. Your speedtests aren't bad so it could be that's happening - perhaps the cache is getting too small for the audience?

IIRC, TelstraClear Google cache is managed by Google itself.

Watched that video again this morning in 720p and it buffered in under a minute swapped to 360p and the buffer was just ahead of the video...

You're right that it buffers more slowly at 240p and 360p than it does at HD 720p. Must be that 720p is in a local cache and the others are not. I would not have expected it to buffer faster at 720p than at 240p and 360p but it does.

Very 'choppy' tonight. Unwatchable really. According to TelestraClear's speedtest site I am getting 1.46Mbps download, and 2.16Mbps upload.

I just wanted to chime in here with my experience.

I've had Telstra adsl2 for a year and have always found YouTube frustrating to watch no matter the resolution it wants to stop every few minutes and buffer. It just will not stream. Even if I want to replay something after watching it once, it will stop every little bit.

Someone from my work suggested trying IE instead of Chrome, and lo and behold, they were right. As much as I hate IE, YouTube seems to have no problems when using it.

If you are using Chrome make sure the addons list only ONE Flash player. Some installs list two and that causes problems.

Just Watching BBQ Pit Boys Smoked Bacon Cheeseburgers in 720p. Absolutely no problem, no buffering.

Firefox and Flash are both up to date, Youtube mentions making sure Flash is updated.

Not sure if it's already in cache, the vid was only released midday today, so I guess itr's possible someone else has already brought it down.

Also noticed very poor youtube performance lately, back to the bad old days.

I think it is basically anything uncached is terrible. Often reloading the page will "fix" it, I'm guessing that the first hit starts it dragging into cache, but you're still personally pulling from overseas, but hit refresh after it's been stalled for a bit and you get the newly cached version where in it rips along

Since I don't watch a lot of generally "popular" stuff that the unwashed masses do, I'm guessing most of my things are not in the cache, which is very very annoying. The unwashed masses conversely probably hardly notice the problem at all because some other of their sheeplike herd has caused their video to cache already.
