Try slingshots SMTP server with no authentication...

You need to have the SMTP server of the provider your currently connected to. So Slingshot SMTP when the PC is at a house with slingshot, Telecom, Vodafone ETC.

The Win 8 Mail app sucks for anything that isn't an Exchange or Outlook.com mailbox.

 

I would download Thunderbird and give that a go.

very strange that I can login to the my account page on Vodafone website yet cannot connect to the mail server

Calling it quits guys, i'll get my mate to get a hold of Vodafone and confirm what his username, password etc is. Will try again tomorrow.

If you can login online your password is correct. Use the webmail and see if you can login. if you cant we would need to reset your mail profile. http://webmail.vodafone.co.nz

This is why I have advised to test using ' Thunderbird ' more than once

If the settings work in another email client then issue is not on Vodafone side

With nothing working i took the laptop back to my mates place using his own network wifi etc, went through the same advice given here and it worked straight away.
