FYI I have virtually completed a long step-by-step dummies install guide (starting at putting the CD in the drive) for VFX on Trixbox.

Keep an eye on the WxC forum and/or my blog. I will post the guide soon after my VFX account is actually setup for Asterisk, and I test my configuration.

(Trixbox is a more 'productised' newbie friendly implementation of CentOS, Asterisk, AMP, FreePBX, FOP, HUDLite and other stuff).

maverick:Not concerned as VFX does not allow for multiple DDI's ...

Hi Phil - only just noticed you were back.
Do you envisage that a customer could buy two VFX numbers, then assign each to a seperate trunk?  Sounds a like a plan to me - if I wanted two DDI's.
Really great getting use to the VFX bills - so much more pleasent than the phone part of the Telstra bill used to be! Laughing  Will stoke up an Asterisk box at home in a few weeks, and be in touch.  Should I register next week, or wait till I'm really ready (start of December)?

Hi Steve,

Yes we will be allowing up to 2 seperate VFX Lines same as the residential devices once, you can wait untill December if you like that should be fine

This is not a retrospective 'doh' on my part - but I was just wondering if getting the Asterisk capability on my VFX line then kills off my ability to connect via the PAP2T ?

I dont of course expect them to register concurrently with Asterisk, but yeah... you see where Im coming from?

The current setup also allows up to 4 concurrent calls - 2 simultaneous incoming and 2 simultaneous outgoing calls (I assume this is going to be the final configuration Phil or Josh?) which makes it an ideal upgrade for a busy home and saves having 2 different VFX numbers and having to put one on divert on busy to the 2nd line as a few people seem to have done.

Yep that device is now gone from the VFX network Tony, it can no longer connect and will blank itself once conntected to a network

not 100% sure on this yet, we will be looking at this as part of the soft launch so stay tuned

IMHO it's a good number. If you're running Asterisk you probably want to manage your own VM which means that a single incoming trunk is impractical because it means a 2nd caller will just get a busy signal if you disable VM. Having the 2nd trunk allows you to send it to VM if you've only got a single device or answer it if you have call waiting enabled or have more than one phones. Being able to make two simultaneous outgoing calls is also very nice. iTalk allow it so you really have to be one step ahead! :-)

I'm not sure I understand this reply.  Are you saying that once I sign up for Asterisk, I can no longer use my PAP2T?  Makes it very critical that I get the Asterisk setup right first time ... no going back.  At least I can plug the PSP2T into my Asterisk box!Tongue out

Have I understood this right?

I understand this to mean:

I have a PAP2T that was provisioned for VFX.
I asked to be moved to the platform that supports Asterisk.
Doing so renders my PAP2T unable to connect to VFX (as it cant connect to the system providing Asterisk support)
You do need to get the Asterisk config right pretty quick!

Which is what I expected, I was just after confirmation...

Is there another provider who does things this way?  I was expecting something that offered me a SIP trunk, and allowed me to connect what I like to it - at my risk.  That is the purpose of an open standard.

Yes, you are looking for iTalk - standard SIP, unlocked devices, use anything. I hear not great things about call quality, general quality of voice service, and customer service, but thats all 2nd hand info - im sure they have lots of happy customers.

WorldXChange never offered 'SIP trunks that you can connect what you like to it' - they have been very upfront about their reasons for lockdowns, and this latest offering is still only soft-launched, and has always been touted as 'Asterisk support', not 'bring your own SIP device support' like iTalk has.

Cheers :)
