Without knowing the DSL stats from your modem that show your ADSL sync rate it's impossible to offer any other advice.

Try typing this into your web browser

http://192.168.1.1/

then probably Name Admin
Password Admin

then look for statistics, xdsl or similar. That should give you your modem stats

sbiddle: Looking around that area and your information above I'd go as far as saying that there is nothing wrong.

My pick is you're on a BUBA connection off an ASAM in which case you're ADSL1 so could have never got 10-15Mbps.

Chorus put you in a 5Mbps area so your performance lines up with that.

no idea what that is or means and not sure I want to either ☺

So bottom line do you think it is worth getting a master ADSL filter would that speed my connection up ?
And in the past 18 months it has definitely slowed down.

As others have mentioned, to fully diagnose the issue, then we need the DSL line stats. Basically, this is the rate that your modem is talking to the local exchange or cabinet, and gives some indication of the quality and length of the physical cable between you and the exchange.

The DSL stats can also show up problems with the wiring inside your house - this is a very common issue as you are essentially using wiring designed to run phones for a completely different purpose (internet data). The master filter talked about is a device that is wired permanently in to the house wiring that isolates the (potentially) problematic existing wiring from the internet connection, and gives you a single outlet to plug your modem into and removes the need for all the plugin filters. The normal cost from Chorus to install is about $200.

A master filter will generally help increase the quality/speed of the line between your house and the exchange or cabinet.

However, given the speedtest results are roughly in line with Chorus expected throughput of 5MB/s, it's less likely there is a major fault with the line.

The >5Mb/s area indicates a long line between you and the exchange or cabinet you are connected to - the only solution to this is move house (i.e. closer).

If you are getting a wide variation in speed (much slower in the evenings) and have confirmed that it isn't another device in your home (TV etc.) using a lot of data at this time, then the most likely explanation is a bandwidth bottleneck feeding the cabinet or exchange you are connected to. With lots of people streaming TV at night, this is becoming more of an issue, particularly in more rural areas on BUBA connections as noted above. This is a limitation of either the hardware in the local exchange/cabinet or the connection to that cabinet that is shared by everyone connected to it, regardless of ISP.

Basically, if you can provide the DSL stats requested, then it should be fairly easy to work out whether this is an issue between you and the local exchange, or an issue between the exchange and the rest of the world. Given your approximate location, I would guess at the second, but it is only a guess...

I'm guessing 'the standard vf white modem' is the Vodafone station / SerComm SGH 1500?

If so, 'we' dont have access to the DSL stats, only mode (adsl 2+ etc) and uplink and downlink speeds (MBits/s)

Ol first of all thanks for the fantastic replies even though some it may be a bit to technical for me.

My router is the vf station SGH 1500 which does not have DSL STATS and moving is not an option.
So basically reading all the posts there is not much wrong and not much that I can do.

Your ISP should be able to arrange Chorus to do this. It is normally about $200.

Not too bad, but it depends if you're connected to that cabinet or not, and what path it takes to reach your house. It could run all the way to the end of the street and all the way back to get to you.
