I had a play around with my HG659 this evening, and it was reasonably straight forward to get it to act just as an ATA sitting behind my third party router.

To do this, I disabled VLAN tagging on the WAN, removed all connections from it other than the phone service, then connected it to the network via WAN. It also makes sense to disable wireless if you're using it this way.

Thanks will give this a crack tonight, will it not connect the sip over the lan?

DarrynJ:

A technician will install a jackpoint (if there's not an existing one nearby the fibre modem) and link it up to the rest of the jackpoints in the house in order to give them life.

Is that a chorus standard?

i do fiber and its not part of the install process for us. (Wont mention which company)

Don't want to confuse the op or get there hopes up.

Yeah that's the standard process for our fibre connections through Chorus.

My guess is that it won't, but I haven't tried it that way.

Ive been stuck with the Huawei since I got UFB, drives me mad.

I haven't had the time to try sort it out. But It was suggested to me to connect my R8000 to the ONT, and connect the Huawei to the R8000 disabling the wifi. But I don't really know which setting to mess with and don't have any spare time at the moment.

Interested to see how you end up getting on!

Ok, I got the WAN side to get a DHCP ip from my dhcp server. I checked the SIP settings for line 1 details and the're empty. I reset the hg659 and it was still empty, so I guess a call to VF tomorrow to get the sip/username/pwd to use.

I thought SIP never liked to be double nat'd going ONT > Mikrotik > HG659

Mine still seems to be working fine today - but the only call I've received was from a telemarketing robot...

This is the first time I've used a VOIP service, so not sure if they would normally have NAT issues. Based on some feedback in the Vodafone forums, I was expecting to have to set up some port forwarding, but it doesn't seem to be needed.

I'm using a Linksys router loaded with tomato firmware, not that I would expect that to make any difference.

My HG659 didn't have any SIP details when it arrived by courier, and as far as I can tell it just had them pushed out from Vodafone's end. You might just be able to reset the HG659 while its directly connected to your ONT and see if it downloads the SIP credentials again?

Update: got no config overnight

Called VF and spent an hour with the guy, turns out they had more than 1 router provisoined to me so I would never get the config. Eventually got a config, now I have incoming calls working but can't make outgoing calls. He thinks it might still be trying to use the copper line to dial out, but in the huawei I can see in the logs the attempt to call the outgoing number.

Once I was off the phone with the guy, I removed vlan10 off the wan interface, plugged in my router and plugged the huawei into my switch and it works :) so thanks for that.

Now to sort this outbound calling business out, I might undo the jack point and take the old pots line out of the mix.

Do you mean that it was still connected to the copper lead in? That would have caused problems if it was still connected.

I just got UFB installed today with Vodafone as a provider. Would you be able to give me a few more details as to how you went about the Huawei as an ATA? I have admin access to the Huawei but the settings seem somewhat counter-intuitive (to me at least!).

Thanks

Edit: Never mind, after a bit of trial and error I got it working. I'm not quite sure I could describe the steps I went through but if anyone needs to know just pm me and I'll have a go at working out the steps in reverse :)
