Well if that is the case, it does not seem right.

I would understand putting the per MB charge up after 85GB of free data being used...but not just on offpeak...as thats when they want people to use their quota, to releice stress on the peak hours....hmmmm....

So in theory, if I use the entire free off peak 85GB, from then onwards, it will be cheaper to change my downloading/internet habits yet again to peak hours...

Would appear to contradict the whole point of trying to get (some) users to do their downloading during offpeak hours?

maverick:
By choosing the user profile 'Torrent' you pay $0.0015 per MB (approximately $1.54 per GB) during the on-peak hours of 8am until midnight.

I don't understand what this $1.54/GB is in relation too? I don't understand when I would be paying that fee.
manhinli: $2.56 per GB midnight to 8am (after 75GB)

$1.54 per GB outside of this.

Slingshot are also working on a new plan with free off-peak data, no strings, no caps,  free. (1am - 6am)

Isn't it a bit of a turnaround to be premoting torrents when it was xnet sending it's users warning notices for p2p use?

You will be paying The $1.54 a GB between 8am and midnight everyday instead of $1.02 all day everyday

Ok seems like the ViewBill page is fixed. I just switched over to the Torrent plan :).

Now on Viewbill it says:

WxC Services:

Description

Service Status

Fusion - Torrent Active Active

1 question left:

Maverick mentioned this is immediately available etc, so what will be the billing like for this month? (May). I will try downloading something after midnight today and see if it shows up in traffic cap or not.

Before I don the moderator hat, there are plenty of legitmate uses for peer to peer. WorldxChange weren't disconnecting or sending out warnings for that. They were sending out warnings for using peer to peer software to download/distribute copyrighted material.

Big difference.

Anyway - now that thats out of the way, back on topic.

So breakeven costing....

I am going to assume the average 'torrenter' that is after this plan still does 15GB per month on peak regardless

bandwidth cost on torrent plan = 15*1.54 + max((x-75)*1.54,0) where x = GBs downloaded
(this of course assumes you wouldn't have been silly enough to download offpeak after exceeding 75GB)

on Standard plan that would be cost = x*1.02

Breakeven point = 23.1 + 1.54x - 115.5 = 1.02x

x = 177GB!

So unless you are a super high user this plan is better......

But I would agree, seems strange to be charging more then the on peak rates after 75 GB - Maverick can you comment?

I would have much rather seen a flat fee of 20c per GB offpeak or something similar

Yeah thats a good point, if after the 75gb you are still downloading more, you would think that the on peak price would be more than normal to discourage downloading during the peak period, and offer a really attractive pricing for after midnight to encourage people to download during this period that is if they are downloading more than the required 75gb.

If the off peak price is higher, wont this encourage people to download during peak times again if they go over the cap?

Only that we believe this plan works for all , and hopefully can change user habits for non urgent downloading while rewarding those that do, were the first to do this others will copy but as usual "were just not normal" and try to meet the needs of customers as well as ourselves , how well this will do will obviously be up to the customers ,we will always listen to reasonable feedback and comments and look at options as we have done before, but as usual we know we can't satisfy everyone and we never will thats just the way of the world, our commitment is that we will keep trying and we belive we have a pretty well balanced feature set that covers Voice and Data.

The thing about us is that we don't lock people in for our services, others do and like to lock you in to contracts we dont, so it all comes down to the individuial needs and we won't force you to stay, but I think we stack up pretty well across the board.... but it's up to you to decide if any plan is right for you. Wink

Are users still able to switch back from the torrent plan to the normal plan? I have Fusion and may possibly activate this torrent thing start of next month.

I once went to a chinese takeaway.
It had a self-serve buffet, with a set price per platefull.
Near the cashier was a stainless steel bar you must pass your plate under.
It was set >> 75mm << above the counter. Your plate must pass under this.
Was it the same gentleman who chose the 75 GB limit ?

regards,
Bruce.

Without a doubt, in my mind, WxC is the best ISP in the country. Quick in there with removing the burden of having to have a normal phone line. Quick in there with removing the burden of arbitrary data caps. Quick in there with traffic shaping on a voluntary, proactive basis - shaping in the sense of getting customers to shape themselves rather than forcing it on them.

Not to mention having the decency to post on a neutral forum with customers.

As a reader of the Consumerist, it really brings home how good we have it.
