thanks sbiddle, that clears it up. adamj, i wasn't meaning that vodafone had built those sites... they are doing their own compression/formatting on top of website that you visit (mobile or not, regardless of who built it). its compression/formatting by vodafone, as well as formatting by those websites. sorry for any confusion.

adamj: That's not 'optimizing' thats just attaching additional content.

My photo was mearly to show the end effects to the user - behind the scenes it is getting optimized as well, as sbiddle and I have said, this only comes into play on some of the apns

adamj: I know for a fact that the Air NZ and Trade Me sites were built by those respective companies, it's not vodafone "optimising" their normal sites.

Did you miss the bit where I said

Filterer: Obviously this is separate to the intentionally wap designed sites such as m.trademe.co.nz that you refer to adamj

I too know the difference between a custom built wap portal and a optimized normal site. I should, I build them in my day job.

I'd still like to see some options where you say use the supaprepay addon system to buy a higher datablock for a single days's use.
e.g it would suit me if I went to my parents place and wanted just a small block of mobile data for that weekend to use the laptop with for general internet use, general internet would use 10mb real quick.
say have rated like $1 for 10meg, $2 for 20 meg, $5 for 50 meg or $10 for 100 meg even.

Hi all, sorry... bathing children.

We're charging at the rate of $5 per megabyte up to $1, which works out at less than 1c/KB. Once you hit $1 there's no charging from there to 10MB. From there it's $1/MB until midnight and it's reset for the next day.

You told us you didn't want a walled garden... so it's gone. No more walled garden. Instead, everything is charged at this rate (the only exceptions being Vodafone Compass and Sky Mobile TV). That's not to say future offers won't be zero rated but the model has been reset to be more like the online experience on the regular internet in that you pay for traffic not for content.

Right, back to the bath.

10MB / day however wouldn't go very far using an iphone and full featured browsing, but it would be useful for email.

WHAT!! the walled garden is going already, i only just got Wikipedia working on it (thanks Vodafone, altho it took a bit long to get fixed) and now that it is going to cost again, looks like i will stop using them all again, even at $1 for 10MB, that is VERY expensive, you can go thou 10MB in a few mins with 3G.

Very VERY disappointed that the "walled garden" is going, I can't possibly see why someone would want to pay to go to those sites if it was free? Especially with all the prices going up (eg, Petrol, milk....)

This prepay data pricing is brilliant. Extremely competitive, and very attractive.

I must say however, that stipulating no VoIP is quite a concern. Why is Vodafone trying to control what I do with the connection I pay for?

Its not like VoIP places a strain on resources - whether I use 1MB of email or 1MB of VoIP call, its still revenue. If you let me use VoIP, I will stay connected all the time, recieve a few calls a week, generally only make calls from the office or home where I am in WiFi coverage anyway, and your data revenue increases, while voice calling for me will remain largely unaffected.

Is the no VoIP a 'rule' only, or is it enforced from a technical standpoint (I am sure some enterprising GZer will find out soon anyway).
