As to the lag: if two of you are both having lag at the same time, but are in different suburbs, then it's probably nothing to do with any overload on the cable network (which would be localised to a cable node) and more likely to have to do with the international bandwidth. And that is identical for TelstraClear's cable and ADSL (including PDQ), so a change to ADSL would not improve that at all.

Bandwidth does seem to be a bit of an issue at present. Despite the new CMTS upgrade you may as well forget about watching YouTube videos in the evening on TCL as this can be very painful.

I've been having the same issues. Every night now between around 8pm - 11pm I get majar lag in WoW and constant DCs'. I live in wellingtion.

If i ping nz websites to test the time, it will average up to 5kms or even time out. Website pages will also take very long to load, if at all.

I hope they fix their cable service soon, it's been going on all week.

I can't find any solutions or even if telstra are doing anything to fix it. :(

Hi all.

Direct connecting the 360 to the modem has (so far) resulted in a completely stable connection.

I am very hesitant to draw conclusions. It may be that simply resetting the modem is the cause for the return to stability.

I'm going to keep doing this over the next week and assuming I continue to get the sort of stability I got tonight then it would seem that in my case anyway, the router is the most likely cause. This is a bit of a shock/let down as the DIR-655 is a top end router but maybe there are simply compatibility issues.

Anyone else on TLC cable with these issues (and using a router) might want to try a direct connect as well.

From what I've been reading, it actually sounds like linksys work better than D-link, so I might change brands. long term, direct plugging the modem to the 360 is not going to fly -I want my partner to have access to the net whenever she wants/needs it.

Bartender = broken record... Read this thread.. Buy a linksys WRT54GL Flash it with DD-WRT.. Problem solved.

Hi all

I have been disconnecting all morning in the Khandallah area...and no router.

Its goodbye cable....anyone recomend a good ADSL2 service provider in the area as I am only 1 km from Khandallah exchange?

An update....
Just got off the phone from T/C and they tell me that when a node is full it auto transfers to a not so full node and so on..etc
These transfers disconnect you momentarily and they only happen during peak hours.

Seems really weird to me

This IS NOT a router issue. This is a issue with Telstras cable network.

Which is not to say that there are no router incompatibility issues with Telstras network, only that even with a compatible router (or no router at all) gaming is a problem with this cable service, because performance goes up and down all over the place!

I havn't had the lag for two days now so looks ok. (i don't use a router)

Though I will think about moving to adsl if it happens again.

Bartender, while I appreciate (and to some degree agree) with your above link, I notice the DIR-655 has been added to your list of routers that have compatibility issues with Telstra cable.

Assuming it was added on the strength of my problems, I think you should remove it off that list. There is not enough clear evidence to classify this router as "incompatible"

Further more, you have the DI-655 listed as compatible, which I believe actually refers to the same device. This is likely a mis-print, as there is actually no DI-655 model listed on dlinks product list, and the few websites that do list it, appear to be referring to the DIR-655.

Note this router has not caused "disconnections" from Telstras network, nor have I ever been required to "reset" it due to lockups. The issue was specific to "gaming lag/dropouts"

My current view is that there was likely a legitimate issue with ARP traffic and the default IP address range -but this is not specific to DLink: Linksys routers need to have their default range (192.168.1.*) changed as well. Unfortunately, correcting this fault did not solve all my problems, as evidenced by users who do not use routers at all: problems still occur.

It is too early for me to comment on the value of connecting directly to the modem (as positive at my experience has been so far) though common sense suggests this is probably the most lag-free way to connect when gaming, if for no other reason than the simple fact that no one else in the house can use any bandwidth.

On that note, the DIR-655 actually uses a high-spec ubicom processor that offers higher throughput than cheaper routers + QoS which priorities gaming/video (UDP) over internet/web (TCP).

It also features gigbit switching and one of the highest rated 802.11n speeds offered by draft n routers

Or to give a slightly more accurate location, it's about 100 meters down the road from Simla Cresent train station. or Here. Strangely enough it's listed as Heritage site (well that's what the sign says outside)... go figure.

Thanks guys. According to Google I'm 1.1 km away. Strange that the "Khandallah" exchange is on the edge right by Ngaio though. And it's a heritage site? Haha, I wonder if the equipment inside is original ;)

Khandallah was one of the first exchanges in NZ to go digital with the NEAC (?) switches. I recall a friend who worked for Telecom at the time but lived in Broadmeadows "arranged" for his home phone to be connected to this exchange so he could have digital services like call waiting etc.

1.1km sounds like a long way from the Exchange if you want decent ADSL service. I would wait and see if the new network topology that TCL is rolling out alleviates your problem before jumping from cable to DSL service. Plus as Bartender notes, the flashed Linksys routers go a long way to solving microoutages. Not so sure about latency on the cable - I don't notice these since I don't do games.

Sorry, my bad, I was only quoting the DI-655, as that is what Buzzy had purchased ex-the US, and he has not experienced problems with it thus far.

If you are interested I can lend you my WRT54GL, and see how it goes for gaming. Personally I see little benefit of Gigabit networking over 100Meg, I don't often move 50MB+ files around my LAN, and when I do I tend to walk away from my computer and just leave it up to it.

Just my 2 cents worth, you shouldn't observe any sort of lag or ping loss when running through any router, unless it is under heavy load, and lets get real here, in wgtn the fastest downlink you can get is 10mb, and 2mb up, that shouldn't be pushing a COTS router over the limit... I would hope. This chart is quite a good link showing maximum throughput. And that's not even with the DD-WRT or Tomato firmware on the WRT54GL
