coffeebaron: You are not comparing apples with apples. The normal Telecom land-line price is $45 per month. The closest equivalent plan is $49.95 per month (Go Express FS/FS + 3GB). So therefore:

Fusion + 3GB = $73 per month

Telecom = $95 per month.

Of course, you could be in one of the lucky areas which has a discounted rate (looking at his pricing). And you could use WorldxChange for dsl as well.

You aren't stuck with Xtra.

billgates: You get 75GB FREE offpeak data from 12am till 8am though Xnet with all there plans. So even if you go for the river plan and pay them $34.00 you get 75GB free off peak data.

Where does it say this? I have been looking around and it only says you get free data in the torrent plan...

Yes, that is quite right, and the above was just one comparison. Note that I did say "the normal Telecom land-line price". The other comparison would have been to use the cheapest possible broadband + phone plan Vs the cheapest N-DSL + VoIP plan.

I guess what it all points to is there are so many options and everyone's needs are different.

The simple truth of the matter, as far as the original post is concerned, is that for SOME people it is beneficial financially, for others it is not.

Savings will usually come in the form of lower toll rates, free calling features (voicemail, call forwarding etc) and only paying for the data you use (instead of buying a certain amount per month, etc).

I personally think that if your situation will work out around about the same and you dont see any benefit, then by all means stay with a telecom line + flood. Though you do realise that on NDSL you get automatically upgraded to ADSL2+ when your exchange gets updated, right? Otherwise you will be limited to ADSL1 speeds.

If you need a second phone line then it will definately be cheaper with NDSL than the traditional methods. I'm not exactly sure about slingshots NDSL plans but from memory i think they are priced around about the same too, so you're not exactly being sold a lemon. Orcon offer homeline + internet at varying prices, some of which are far more expensive.

Anyways, i hope this helps. Flame or not. I initially had some issues with the VoIP but after a quick google and reading through various forums like these it was easy enough to troubleshoot.

Exactly. I know someone who used to pay over $500 a month to Telecom and once moved to Xnet is paying about a third of that. Toll rates, free intelligent services, etc - all adds up.

Here: 0.15 of a cent per megabyte (or $1.54 per gig) daytime rate and First 75 gigabytes per month off-peak (midnight to 8am) FREE!

Voip is great, I have seen many setups where people have 128Kbps uploads or try and run torrents with no QOS etc and you just can't get good results. Also VoIP has been promoted as "cheap internet calls" so some stigma about garbly squarky robotic calls still remains. I use it as "local presence" and inter-city PABX and trunking platform which it totally excels at, try doing that with a traditional service or PABX.

I just got another $49 Budge-tone phone today, DSE are clearing them out but be quick! Password to get into it for Asterisk (my silent, 10W thin client runs mine) etc is "budgieclub".

Xnet are "not pricier than Telecom" but you have to pay Naked DSL prices which add $23 odd to the cost of the basic DSL service+markup+voip service.

Shame Telecom no longer offering the old $26 Homeline economy :-( it used to be perfect just to get DSL.

billgates is wrong, Stream/River/Flood all charge $1.02/Gb regardless of what time of day.

Indeed - but Torrent isn't a plan in itself, merely a billing option which can be applied to any existing plan :).

You sacrifice the $1.03/GB rate for a higher $1.53/GB in exchange for the 75GB offpeak. It makes sense as a billing structure, someone was just mistaken above by saying it's available on all the plans.

I think everyone's a little frustrated with the way our whole telecoms system is set up. It would be great to simply pay for a regular broadband plan but I don't think this will be the case for some time to come. If you don't use a home phone line (or experience good results with Xnet's VoIP), I would still recommend it as good value.

er, almost :P

first: you can have stream, river or flood (the speed options for ADSL, or just Fusion urban/rural for NDSL)

then: for whatever you chose in step 1 you can choose pay per meg or torent (the pricing/billing options)

if that makes sense... so technically is IS available on all current plans.
