Throw us a bloody bone already. TelstraClear seriously needs to get its act together, on both TV and broadband.

Throw you a bone? Get their act together with broadband?
So the fact that you have the best bone available in the market right now isn't sufficient.
Let me guess, you want a bigger, faster & cheaper bone?

Come off it dude, if it wasn't for TelstraClear, Telecom wouldn't be implementing VDSL2 so soon, Orcon wouldn't but going balls out in Wellington and you would have to tolerate the joys of ADSL running off 75 year old copper wire.

Hahah, what? Sorry, but you appear to be living in 2006. TelstraClear cable is no longer the "best bone available". 10Mbit with 40GB data for $110. That is nothing compared to the ADSL2+ plans from other companies.

Something tells me TelstraClear's cable network with years-old plans worse than ADSL2+, in Wellington and Christchurch only, have little to do with Telecom bringing VDSL2 to a few Auckland suburbs in Q2 and the rest of the country later.

I've been grateful for TelstraClear cable in this decade, but in recent years xDSL has jumped ahead, and cable has stagnated. It's as simple as that.

I won't be getting a roadside cabinet in my suburb till Nov 09. So I have until then to decide if TCL's act would get any better. I am reasonably happy with the performance, the charging is what sucks. I am on the 40G plan and normally do go over at $2.95/2G

Anyway this is getting a bit OT. I am also patiently waiting for the TCL HD PVR and potentially more HD programming from them to take advantage of it.

Can you name an ADSL2+ plan in the cable area that I could sign up to tomorrow without paying more than TelstraClear and get garaunteed speed above 10Mbit without having to live next door to the exchange?

Telecom have consistantly stated that part of the reason they invested in the VDSL2 network was due to competitor pressure.

A little fact; over the last year in Wellington where TelstraClear's cable broadband is available, the company saw a 6% increase in broadband subscribers and now hold slightly more than 55% market penetration in the cable area.
I admit the speed on the plans has stayed put over the last year or two years, I will even admit that the price increase was a bitter pill to swallow but I will consistantly defend the fact that cable broadband is going from strength to strength and I honestly can't wait to see what market share TelstraClear will have at the end of this financial year.

Despite your pro-DSL campaign, numbers don't lie.

Why should it be guaranteed? Cable speeds aren't guaranteed... Anyway, lets see, there's Telecom Pro, which is 40GB for $80. Telecom! I live about 1km (line distance) away from my exchange, so I will no doubt see >10Mbit. And it's $30 cheaper.

No doubt. But not competitor pressure from TelstraClear. As I hinted, it just doesn't make sense.

So because TelstraClear's broadband subscriptions in Wellington (total, or just cable?) have increased 6% in a year, after a big advertising campaign, means their plans are better? Tell me, what was the growth rate for broadband (all ISPs) across the country over the last year?

I admit the speed on the plans has stayed put over the last year or two years, I will even admit that the price increase was a bitter pill to swallow but I will consistantly defend the fact that cable broadband is going from strength to strength

How is "the speed on the plans [staying] put over the last year or two years" with a $10 price increase "going from strength to strength"? Stagnating is strengthening now?

What does the market share have to do with the quality of the plans? And I'm not on a "pro-DSL campaign", I'm just on an anti-TelstraClear campaign for reasons spelled out in this thread. Numbers don't lie? Of course they don't. So how about the numbers that make up the relative plan specs of TelstraClear's cable plans versus other ISPs? Or are they lying now?

For most of the time speed has not been an issue for me, and I do like the 2Mbs upstream that xDSL does not offer. For example I am able to watch HD streamed online reasonably smoothly. It's just that I cannot afford to do that since the data charges will kill me :(

To compete with the perceived advantages of xDSL+ TCL need to come up with better pricing packages. The 25Mbs plan in ChCh is out of sight - who can afford that?

I have to say that when Chorus bring in VDSL, TCL cable's last advantage (upload speed) will finally have some competition.  Also, now that Sky have HD and a PVR, it'll be an easy decision to switch when VDSL is made available in my area.  With number portability, I don't even have to change my home phone number.

That's the good aspect of competition and in Wellington there is decent competition. Consumers have a choice. There is no right or wrong decision - just what works for you.

To reiterate once TC get the HD PVR going and some improved broadband caps, they could wipe the floor of the competition. But they seem to be content to rest on their laurels and those laurels are getting somewhat battered and creased!

For me TC is still the best for internet in Wellington but their TV service is lousy and their phone service is irrelevant (what companies don't offer a phone nowadays?).

With other ISP's slowly getting their act together with ADSL2+/VDSL and SKY offering HD it's now time for TC to revise their offerings and show that they want to remain a market leader.

From a public perspective it appears TC have stagnated.  Don't get me wrong, I want to stay with TC and retain my triple service package but they are being hauled in by the competition at a rate of knots and better alternatives are either available or just around the corner.

It's time for TC to show their hand.

As a customer that is currently in the process of taking all my business elsewhere, I just couldn't justify the cost any more.

I was happy with the tv, and as someone said, the phone is irrelevant, but the killer was the internet costs.  Switching to xtra i can affor to drop down to a 20gb plan, and if I go over then oh well I get slowed down, but I wont be charged extra....

So maybe in a year or so TC make get their act together and start moving a big on plans and services, and so I'll revisit then.

But other than this here's a customer of over 8 years making the move...

This sort of article makes me wonder if we will even see a rollout this year. If Sky can blame a profit loss on HD then whats the chance that tougher economic times dont mean TC will use that as an excuse not to bother.

Like most on triple service I'm tired of no information, no HD progress, plans getting less attractive, pings increasing from 150 to 450-600 and overall being ignored bar getting a bill and having to pay it.

I'm sure some of the bean counters in Australia might start allocating funding as customers start jumping ship.

It really is sad because what TCL want to offer seriously does kick ass over anything that is in the NZ marketplace and is a worldclass product. It just seems unfortunate that people who come up with these fantastic solutions aren't the bean counters who allocate funding.

Well they blame their drop in profit on HD setup costs, but in the next breath say it's been a spectacular success:

The launch of the new HD platform was a "spectacular success" with 51,485 new MySky HD subscribers as of December 31, said chief executive John Fellet.

Those setup costs are a one-off thing and with those 51k people now paying $15 per month extra, it doesn't take a genius to work out they'll be making that money back eventually.

You're right though - if credit is hard to come by, it could be used as an excuse by TCL because they'll have to eat the setup costs until they sign people up and start generating revenue for it.
