well.... in a bit of a surprise 2 Degrees just launched esims

"2degrees has enabled a new feature today - electronic SIM cards or eSIMs, which replace a physical SIM card and allow one phone, iPad or smart watch to hold two or more mobile plans, each with its own number.

You could use one account for personal use, and one for work, or one for a local account and one you use when roaming overseas. 2degrees says an eSIM can also be used for its service while your physical SIM card remains on a Spark or Vodafone NZ account.

2degrees says its eSIM functionality - live from today for business customers, with consumer accounts to follow later this month - will work with a range of Apple, Samsung and Oppo devices (see list end of article).

2degrees says setting up an eSIM will cost the same as a physical SIM card which sell from $5. And if you have two phone accounts on one device, you'll get charged for both."

Wearables to follow soon 👍

Consumer accounts now opened to eSIM as of late Aug.

Meanwhile, Apple will likely be announcing their Apple Watch 8th generation this Thursday, and it's been almost 5 years since they introduced their first cellular (eSIM) Apple Watch (series 3).

Well, the iPhone 14 lineup was announced today and at least the US version is eSim only. There's no mention of which other countries are eSim only but is Vodafone going to be ready in two weeks time if Apple decides that NZ will only be getting the eSim only model? Or are loyal iPhone users going to have to jump to Spark or 2Degrees?

I tried to call customer service for switching to esim for a consumer account. Agent didn't even know what I was referring to. Has anyone had any luck in switching to esim with Vodafone?

My comment was in respect of 2d consumer accounts - see the post to which I was replying.

I'm aware, thats the same page that was linked on here in 2020. Just the date is now 2022....

It'll probably just be the 15th month of 2022, I imagine they will launch that alongside their big One launch?

Last I heard, phase 1 is still on track to launch this year - i.e. well before the One launch.

Edit: Of course by this year I mean before the end of the 12th month of 2022 ;)

11:59:59 on New Years Eve is technically before the end of 2022 I guess. Most orgs are in a risk averse period then, not pushing go lives.

But I guess Vodafone wouldn’t want to miss a commitment to eSIM timeframes would they 😉

Also, with a lot less sarcasm, yay I’m glad there finally appears to be some movement!

Reading between the lines, it sounds like support for wearables is going to be well into next year.

I'm off overseas next month and will need to get a cheap PAYG SIM while over there; meanwhile, I need to keep my Vodafone/One business account SIM active. A Vodafone/One eSIM would be great - I could make my NZ number on eSIM and add a cheap PAYG for GB/EU calling. No UK carriers do eSIM PAYG, only pay monthly, so I can't do it the other way round.

I guess I can see why from a business perspective One might not want me to do all my data and calls through a different network, but the roaming costs are fairly eye watering... and my elderly parents probably won't want to phone my NZ mobile all the time.

Roaming revenue erosion will not be the primary reason for delays in esim implementation.
It will be almost entirely IT-system related.

What handset do you use? Does it have dual SIM slot? This may be an option to use while you are travelling overseas next month until eSIM on Vodafone/One NZ is available.

It can't be too far away at this point as I've seen a person in the wild show me their Vodafone/One eSim on their iPhone. They're a business customer of Vodafone so I'm guessing they were able to get in a closed testing phase.
