@timmmay No they will stop working for calls unless the Voice call can be handed down to 2G / GSM

Well... that sucks. I have a corporate account, if I still have that phone I guess I'll need to switch to a provider that still supports 3G, or get a new phone. By 2024 I should be ready for a new phone.

:-)   Most people I worked with moved from the Blackberry  to the iPhone when it came out.  It was the new marketing status symbol.

Ha, I have a Pixel 4a which supports all the new standards, but they're not enabled in NZ. Hence why I'm no longer recommending anyone buy phones from outside NZ - I actually got my Mum to get a Samsung A53 locally yesterday and likely to get similar for my wife at some point. I'll get the latest fast and small Samsung at some point.

I'm rocking a Nokia 7 plus (bought from Spark) which although capable of VoLTE isn't supported by Spark (or Vodafone, but that's less surprising since they never sold it). I wish this was standardised in Android so carriers didn't have to do any work for it to be supported.

I've never understood how they can get away with these shutdowns. The only benefit is to the Telco, not the consumer, ergo the Telco should be required to A: give say 5-10 years notice and B: replace all existing equipment that they are making obsolete at their cost (e.g. replace every 2g/3g handset, modem, etc).

I'm guessing they'll need to have inbound VoLTE roaming sorted by 2024 then.

Ah, this thread is about Vodafone isn't it? My work uses Vodafone so I don't get much choice so long as it works. I think we can get spark connections if vf doesn't work.

I think its logical that older, less efficient technologies are phased out over time as better technology emerges. I do have a few 33.6kbps and 56kbps modems that I use for entertainment sake on my analog PBX.
I do wonder whats happening with GSM/GPRS/2G.

eg. Dial Up -> DSL, Copper to 4G/Fibre, Leaded petrol to unleaded petrol, Coke -> Sugar Free Coke...

It's a bit silly to expect 3G calling to continue to work more than 20 years after it was introduced .
There is a cost to provide antiquated networking tech for the very few phones that only have it .
Providing 3G for little benefit holds back the vast majority on 4G and 5G from better reception .

True. The annoyance is that the technology that my phone supports isn't able to be used.

There is another good reason why parallel imported phones aren't a good idea unless you are careful to check the specs first .

Oh well, you live, you learn .

I got this phone a couple of years ago, it was compatible with everything available at the time. By the time 3G is turned off it'll be due replacement anyway. It's a shame though it won't be much good as a backup, though standard phone functions are somewhat less important these days.

If it was really important I could port the number to a VoIP provider and use a sip client over 4G.
