netspanner:
Wow thats sad, there goes my $75pm cheap unlimited internet. So what happens to the DECO where its named as a cable only device. They will have to replace it.
@netspanner $65 unlimited Fibre plans in the market
quickymart:
Wow, I still remember when cable was the "bees-knees" compared to ADSL and people in Auckland being envious they couldn't get cable.
Times sure have changed though - fibre came along a cleaned the floor with cable.
re the lack of love comment, I agree - I still remember when I worked there Telstra Saturn did their triple play thing: phone, cable TV and internet. Now there's only internet left on the network.
When I was still working at Team Green, I was both impressed and curious as to how it was affordable at price it at $53 a month.
Even at $73 for a gig down 110 up that's incredible value, but with the up keep costs, TC4400s constantly dying, no vendors to work with, and the bare minimum to keep it going + pay downer in chc and Welly to do works... Yeah I can see the reason to kill it.
The DOCSIS 3.1 network has reached eol, and if there's no decision to go 4.0 or expand then they should kill it or sell the assets off to someone who will do something good with it.
This is not me shilling it, but competition is good and so is choice and flexibility.

At 100/20. I knew some customers who specifically asked for HFC because it was cheap for a gig DL. They didn't care about the upload, they cared about the download.

Yeah, but many LFC households may not have a fibre connection, so I suspect One/VF will offer an instant 5G solution, rather than give an upgrade path that makes their customers less "sticky"
coffeebaron:
Maye they'll do a deal with Chorus and share costs removing coax and copper at same time :)
Chorus might have to buy Enable first in Christchurch...

Which is a shame. Those houses that said "no, thanks" to the free fibre install because they had a HFC cable sticking out might soon be limited in options.

What a bummer if true ... as has been said, excellent pricing for 900mbps downloads and unlimited data.
I've been with HFC since TelstraClear.
Here on the South Coast One NZ mobile has been very intermittent in pockets so no idea if they can offer 5G as a cheaper option.
Would they remove the ENTs on homes and remove the underground cables?
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I don't see that at all, they are already offering $400 Prezzy Cards for intact fibre re-connections so I don't see any reason why they wouldn't offer at least a free install.
The losers are all us existing fibre customers who will be subsidising this...
NZ Herald is paywalling this but here is a news piece from 2001 where Telecom was discounting Line Rental to match Saturn in Wellington and Christchurch: Telecom cuts line rentals in Wellington and Christchurch - NZ Herald
The Cable network def had its value over time IMO.

You would never want to sell something like this to another person that would then compete with you.
I'm wondering if the pole and fibre part of the plant would be worth anything to enable or TFF to compete with chorus in those areas and then they replace all the customer lead ins with fibre to get a genuine competitive network.

It's instant money to expand their EonFibre portfolio or AI or whatever they've got going on.
Money absolutely talks in this industry.

I have a feeling if they may remove the aerial cables, they would probably leave the outside termination points as they are - but then again if they remove the network the termination points wouldn't be connected to anything anyway.
One NZ was contacted for comment.

My understanding is that is what Telecom did with the First TV cable network, took the aerial cables down but left the underground in place.
