We've had dns troubles at work on our telstra clear connection aswell.

After having the run around (blaming our nice clean computers, p2p, network equipment on our end etc), basically it came down to being forced to use their dns servers or get nowhere fast.

And we still have dns troubles on a few sites.

The above issue that Screeb has been experiencing has been investigated by Customer Help. The problem is that the owner of the domain has his zone file set up incorrectly. www.escapistmagazine.com is an alias of an alias which causes the DNS query to time-out.

www.escapistmagazine.com is an alias for esc.lb.escapistmagazine.com.
esc.lb.escapistmagazine.com is an alias for www1.tmserv.net.
www1.tmserv.net has address 209.34.224.71

All the owner of the domain needs to do is remove one of the aliases and point it to an A record.

It should also be mentioned that Paradise's DNS servers have a shorter timeout than usual, which is why the problem only occurs with Paradise.

Considering that address is the only known address (to my knowledge) that this problem is affecting, as stated in that email I sent you in a PM, it's unlikely that Paradise will modify the threshold for just 1 address.

If there's a few addresses that this is happening on (again you must realise it's not a problem with Paradise, but the zone files controlled by the domain owner), feel free to send me a PM and I'll advise the right people.

SMH is virtually impossible again - unless I want to go and make a cup of tea between every page loading! :(

Add to your etc/hosts file the following:

127.0.0.1 direct.fairfax.com.au

and you shouldn't have any more problems (apart from losing their adverts, oh noes!)

Hi - This problem resurfaced again for me over the last week. I note that other Australian websites are also loading slower again (e.g. www.australianit.news.com.au) but Fairfax newspaper stable of sites are a joke!
I am on TCL cable network here in Chch and the upgrade to TCL's South Island Fibre InterCity network capacity a back in late April seemed to fix it.  But here we are back in "page load" limbo land again!  Have lodged a query/fault with ClearNet....won't hold my breath though!  ISP of the year, with these recurring performance issues on popular Aust sites - yeah right!
Cheers
Peter

Still nothing back from TCL Faults team - thanks for responses to my post.
I have had a look at the Ping times and trace route on the SMH and it is bascially indicating to me that TCL are ndeed using a proxy on the Fairfax/Sydney Morning Herald front/start page with the smh.com.au URL terminating on a TCL Server IP address (203.97.86.202) with a 22 second ping from here in Chch.  No doubt they are doing this proxy redirect to cut down on this popular sites traffic on their Tans-Tas links.  Fair enough, but their Engineers need to ensure that ISP customers have a commercial/usable page load to this key Australian new site.

There are no capacity issues on the cable networks (on any of the nodes) in Christchurch/Wellington at all. Routing isn't a one-sided issue, so the problem may not lie with TCL.

Looking at the size of the SMH homepage it isn't really surprising that it takes so long - 1.3 meg for a home page is pretty ridiculous.

Given the number of objects on the page and the overall size, a lot of the speed may also depend on what browser you are using (e.g. if you're using Firefox use FireTune or similar to tune the browser to your connection and install AdBlock Plus extension. that should help a bit)

Hi all,

I am an employee of FairfaxDigital, the publisher of www.smh.com.au. I would like to follow up with any issues you are experiencing in viewing our website.

The above mentioned IP address (203.97.86.202) is a form of proxy server, however it is an Akamai Edge Server (a global Content Distribution System), which should always will make your access to our site faster! While this is being hosted within TelstraClear's network, they do not maintain it.

I am also interested in the comments regarding direct.fairfax.com.au not performing correctly. I would appreciate it if people that are experiencing slow load times for www.smh.com.au to ping/nslookup "direct.fairfax.com.au" and reply back with the IP that you receive.

Thanks and regards

Hi freitasm,

Thanks for your fast reply.

Two additional questions for you.

1 / Do you find www.smh.com.au slow to load? eg 10s, 20s, ... 60s ?
2 / What region in NZ are you located in?

Regards
Steve
