As above really Wanaka Already had 2G/3G 900mhz from a site on the hill

The new site is for improved capacity on 2G

so when will this 900mhz band can be used by us?

Do you live in a 900mhz 3G coverage area??

The boys from Korida have just installed a new microwave link for the site in Wanaka town, I'd expect the new site will most definatley be 3G.

Coverage will always be slightly different due to characteristics of the different technologies.

There are plenty of places now that have 3G coverage and no GSM..

True, in fact there are only a couple of sites in the South Island that are still GSM only, and many new sites built are only 3G.

Vodafone are still increasing their coverage too. We recently built a site at Punakaiki (2G & 2100-3G) and had to use a sat-phone to set it up, as Telecom aren't even there.

Punakaiki has coverage? Since when? I can't see it on Vodafone's coverage map.

Wanaka: Kordia have installed a microwave hop to replace the Telecom leased line feeding the site - much cheaper. Still only 2G until the 3G BTS is installed.

Punakaiki: Not yet made live to customers, so even though it may be working VF still have to optimise it. They won't put it on the coverage map until it is made live.

Now based in Perth WA.

Anything else planned for the Coast road? How far does the signal reach from the Punakaiki one? Does it make it to Barrytown?

It's a fairly short roadside pole (the street light is on top of it) so it will probably only be for local coverage.

I haven't actually been to this site yet, so I can't comment on how high up it is.

Now based in Perth WA.

Is it true that a mobile broadband device (like a Vodem) requires a better signal than a cellphone to work properly? I'm looking at getting one down the track, but I'm going to be visiting a rural part of the Coast this month (with excellent 2G coverage) and using my Nokia 6121 as a modem to test how strong the 3G/WCDMA extended signal is there. Is that a good indicator?

Also, if I want to get a Vodem stick later, is the newer one (K7315, I think) better than the stick offered in the $149 Prepay Broadband promotion running at the moment? ie, will the newer stick pick up a weaker signal better than the other one, or are they exactly the same, bar the physical colour?

Nokia 6121c is a good handset also works well phone as Modem

The prepay Vodem is a ZTE that supports up to 3.6 mbps down

ZTE is the make google it

The more costly Vodem supports higher speeds

And If you can get coverage on the Nokia 6121c this means you should get coverage on other devices if the operating freq is correct

You will probably find it depends on the device.
Most USB devices for use on 850 or 900mhz often don't have the RF performance of a handset. Size does matter often. The 6121c is a good handset in 3G only so in those out of the way places where it works and the USB doesn't use the 6121.
Then again an external antenna set up will make a big difference to both speed and range of the device.

Vodems do have a small aerial sometimes they are better on the end of a USB lead in low coverage
