insane: Can you do a Neotrace (free download) to 74.125.15.158? It shows you on a map of the world a graphical representation of your tracert.

When I tracert to that IP using my ISP it goes via Sydney and then to Tokyo and then to Taipei, and then finally to Sunnyvale/San Jose.

When I tracert to what appears to be the youtube cache I use ty-in-f118.google.com it skips the Taipei hop.

Finally download another program called SpeedBit video accelerator, its like a download manager for youtube :)

Hmm, I don't think NeoTrace is using up-to-date geographic info. It claims that 74.125.15.158 goes Auckland -> Perth(!) -> LA -> Sunnyvale, with ty-in-f118.google.com being the same except then going to Tokyo.

However, using services like www.ip2location.com on the IPs, it instead shows it as simply going Auckland -> Hong Kong -> Mountain View (both end here).

One particularly interesting thing this program showed me though is that my gateway is apparently in Auckland...? Even according to that other website. Surely that can't be right... that would mean ALL of my traffic goes via Auckland, but that would explain my latency to it (my gateway)!

I'd rather not resort to something like SpeedBit - I want to treat the illness (or at least identify it), not the symptom.

How late in the night? I noticed that I can watch YouTube videos perfectly fine at around 2am onwards. So much for TelstraClear's "constant speeds throughout the day"...

@Screeb

I recommend you log a fault, as this is not typical of performance on the Cable network.  Please reference this thread.

Update: On thursday I logged a fault online, and on friday, they emailed back telling us to ring them. We did, and I explained the situation to the technician (I had to repeat everything, since he apparently didn't feel like actually reading my email). He denied the problems were the TelstraClear network's fault, told me that >13ms average ping to the gateway was normal, and that we're getting the slow downs because the sites that we were accessing were overloaded during peak times (despite the fact that I'm talking about YouTube, and he admitted that he could stream YouTube videos fine where he was - not to mention that our issues occur in peak NZ time, not peak server time). He then told me to email some traceroute logs when connected directly to the modem (despite the fact that traceroute never indicated any issues in the first place) in order to make sure it wasn't the router (because of course it would be the router when the issues are peak time dependent). He claimed that if we were getting slow speeds on YouTube, etc, that it would show as high latency in the traceroute logs... wow. I begrudgingly did so, and unsurprisingly, the problem remained and the traceroute logs were normal as usual (except for the 13ms latency to the gateway).

So then this morning a Downer EDI technician showed up at the door unannounced. We explained the issues to him, and he did a few tests with the modem and lines. He said he couldn't find anything wrong with the lines or modem, but he replaced the modem anyway, just to make sure. The new modem made no difference. I told him that I figured that the problem is local congestion, and he agreed. He said he'd let them know that they should test the network in my area to find the problem, such as if it's a rogue modem on the network messing it up or something. He said this could take quite some time. Great. He also said that a month or so ago TelstraClear began load balancing the network, so once they get around to doing that here, it might get fixed - then again, it could be that they already have, and that it's actually the cause (he didn't say that).

I'm having the same problems - I have 10mb cable (40gb) and Youtube constantly stops and buffers even non hq or hd videos.  Have you had any luck with Telstra Screeb?

I'm glad it's not just me! Nope, I haven't had any luck. They've simply stopped communicating with me and the issue remains. In fact, within the last few days it's gotten WORSE. Just last night, at almost 3am it was still taking ridiculously long (even longer than usual) to load YouTube videos. Like, 20 minutes to load a 5 minute standard quality video.

Youtube has been unusable the last few days for me also. Performance to overseas sites the last few days has been sucky in general. Especially in the wee hours of the morning. Eg. right now I am only getting half of thedailyshow.com. Lots of broken images etc.

I'm wondering if it is their transparent proxy at fault.  Port 80 stuff seems more affected than other things.  Torrents seem fine. Skype video calls are fine etc.

I'm in Chch on a 10Mb plan.

I'm also on cable, but in kapiti.
Youtube & thedailyshow.com are both fine for me.
However I do block all the ads which slow everything down

Same problems here in CHCH, 10M plan, and Youtube is just woeful most of the time.  Other video sites, no trouble generally.
