Surely the launch is imminent

I was sifting through DSE online
Phones available from their online warehouse in albany but not in stores

Why would you have to subscribe to 3G its part of the GSM family. The network knows what type of handset you have got and will detect 3G coverage.

I think half the problem is that we will need the appropriate settings on our phones - at the moment my phone is configured to use my GPRS settings to access Vodafone Live (eg via the internet APN), so I guess we'll need the settings for the equivalent 3G account settings.

Thoughts?

On the data side the only difference between 3G and GPRS is the air interface modulation. The settings (APN name, SMTP server) should be identical. So a 3G/GPRS device will share common settings and the radio will take care of which physical bearer.

In order to get the maximum number of users I would expect the network allows anyone with a 3G device to get access to the 3G radio network.

The only service difference is video telephony. This uses a 64Kbps circuit switched (CS) connection - this is what achieves the quality necessary. What I'm not sure about is whether Vodafone Live streamed/video/audio etc. content uses this 64K CS bearer or the 3G data bearer?

The settings need to be the same - remember handovers occur between 3G and GSM coverage. You wouldn't want to have different settings for both 3G and GSM coverage!

How well do 3g networks handle 3g to GSM hand offs? Is it mostly related to network set up or the quality/setup of the handset?

It's a bit of both. 3G -> GSM handoffs used to be crap, appears the issue is almost a non event now.

Just to add to the whole topic, just heard from a dealer the launch is definately tomorrow. For those with 3G phones already it'll be interesting to see if you get 3G service in the morning.

Vodafone NZ moves for early 3G launch date
date: May 30, 2001

Vodafone New Zealand local unit has confirmed it will introduce early launch date for 3G services in New Zealand.

Vodafone was at the moment finalising vendor financing deals with some Scandinavian network firms said the chief executive of Vodafone, Grhame Maher and added the "3G launch date would be sooner than people think", however no date was given for live commercial launch.

The move by Vodafone would put pressure on Telecom which just sign a $200million contract to buy 2.5G CDMA network that can be upgraded to 3G. It could force Telecom to shred its 2.5G (GPRS) network service plan and instead focus migrating the exiting network to 3G using the cdma2000 standard.

Timbo, Yes the abscence of television is great!! Mine blew up 4 years ago and I never replaced it. i'm very happy I did.

Wow... Let's see if it comes really on this date. Got a phone call from someone at Vodafone last week promising a press pack, but can't disclose more than this...

As for TV, I do have one, but use it most of the time to watch DVDs. I actually buy these things, and my wife says it's insane to watch the same movie more than once or twice...

The official network activations date (silent launch) is 8th all going to plan though depending on logistics reasons this might be pushed another week, it looks like somone lucky has got it working already!
