Inserted my Novatel 3G/GPRS card this morning in Takapuna and for the first time it connected to Voafone's 3G and started working. Getting reliable 300-500kbps, video streaming fine.

First time this has happened. It must be nearly ready to go!

Good news indeed... But I recommend you change the way you are checking for speed. The UMTS network is only capable of doing a maximum of 384kbps.

I recommend you download a very large file using an FTP client that shows your average speed. This is more reliable than pages with scripts, because most of the times the speed you see is actually from their servers to the last proxy on a network - and Vodafone still uses transparent proxy.

Ok, tried it on the Harrier CDMA EV-DO just now: 710.4Kbps or 87.1Kbytes/second.

What's this page giving on UMTS?

We know EV-DO is quicker but I would not see UMTS doing over 350k on a good day. Next step HSPDA. The Ihug website has a speed test option on it under help (its ok)

this is interesting news,
i was thinking, would you have to specifically subscribe to 3g services because the telecom scenario certain handsets are 3g capable and fixed to numbers
but if on vf i jump sim card in and out of 3g handsets what will dictate the rate at which data is charged?

i use jetstreamgames.co.nz/speed to do my speed testing
got 1mbps on a harrier when i had one and on my 256k dsl i get 270kbps or so

Tried connecting using my Z1010 - it goes to 3G, then drops to SOS Calls Only, then back to normal (2G) - as it has done for months.

So my suspicion is that they will require you to subscribe to the 3G services.

I also have a Z1010 and it does the same as 3g's phone. But I have noticed on vodafone live there are now 3g services available but attempts to use them come back with an error -you need to be in a 3g zone. Must be very soon for the 3g services to be turned on

Thanks for the tip on going to Vodafone Live - I can also see the new 3G menu items (although I can't access any of them yet).

Items include:
- Music Store
- Music Videos
- Mobile TV
- Movie Trailers
- Entertainment Vids
- Sport Videos
- News Videos
- 3G Games
- Free - Live Wire 3G

So perhaps the initial rumour of Monday August 8th might be true? 8-)

In vodafone live menu. From top

C4 Best bits
NZ idol
Sky news

What’s Hot (has the voda 3g logo next to it)

Click on that and you get…

C4 flashbacks
Now 18
Music store
Music videos
Mobile TV
Movie Trailers
Entertainment vids
Sport videos
News videos
3g games
Free – Live wire 3g

And more but when you select you get this…

! – Oops!

This service or content isn’t available when you’re out of the 3g zones or when you are roaming over seas.

Please try again when you’re back in the zones or back in NZ Thanks!

I also went into a Vodafone store this afternoon and they said that they expect to receive the 3G info packs by Monday and everything will be up and running by August 12.

That's definitely the first time that anyone has admitted a definite date (but let's just wait and see).

interesting.. what store?

someone said that a 3g display had been setup in palmy, one would imagine that 3g would be hit home in covered centres more than those that may not have coverage.

Vodafone has 3g spectrum in Palmerston North (license 13140). I would say they will launch there from day one as well. Lots of mobile toting students live there.

In fact it looks like voda have a 3g cell site(or are going to) on or near the Massey campus.
