Dropping prices grows revenue as it encourages growth of data services. While it might reduce revenue for some high use data users it encourages greater customer update of data and higher ARPU.

Exactly, this is why I believe there is a reason to lower calling rates too, the less you pay per minute does not always mean customers will spend less.

This is a real possibility, but then if the market for mobile data is elastic enough to do that, then why wouldn't vodafone have done it last year? (same for calling rates)

Has anything fundamentally changed in the market since then that would cause mobile data to go from being inelastic to elastic? maybe the penetration of laptops has reached a particular point where enough people have the desire to buy a data stick and use it enough to justify the cost.

a preemptive response to 2Degrees (as the article mentions) is also a possibility, but that also seems alittle rash. Nobody actually knows exactly what 2D are going to do with data pricing. it would seem more sensible to have your plans ready, and then the day 2D launches, you measure the correct response and go with that.

Yes, but alas still $100 per GB.

Obviously mobile 3G is more expensive than fixed line, but surely a price under $10 per GB should achievable?

Just a note: Vodafone's quote was that we couldn't confirm the journo's question. We have plenty of plan for the new quarter but we haven't announced anything with regard to data at this point.

what the! So you want all adsl / fiber customers moving to mobile broad band and make it cheaper?

It can be done with 4G, but I do not understand why it cannot be done. As far as I can tell, the networks are slowly trying to up the usage of their networks without overloading them.

With examples of the XT network which provides really good throughput; we could do away with many fixed line connections.

I see the demand for fixed line broadband/phone decreasing by at least 50% over the next 15-20 years.

SteveON: I have used VF 3G with the Vodem Pro and about 3x different HSPA mobile phones. I actually tried it in Hamilton last month, poor result too =[

Were they dual band 3G mobiles i.e its important to have UMTS900 How did you check your data rates . . . i.e best to use ftp server transfer while using something like netpersec. Not all sites are set up to a max of 7.2 DL so data rates will vary depending on the cell your on and the time of day (i.e the number of HSDPA sessions up on the cell will effect your data rate). I consistanly get good results on VF's UMTS900 network.

its best if the file is hosted local 9 meg or over as HSPA ramps up over time
