I hope the lower price will also result in lower calling rates.

I suppose lower broadband pricing is good but it is a pity that I have never had a good experience with the  speed/reliability of Vodafone's 3g network...

Just hope they (VF) have enough backhaul to cope with the extra demand if the pricing looks good

This is good to hear, although I guess a lot of people are tied into term contracts like me and won't see the benefit of any pricing reductions until the end of their contract term. My Vodafone 3G broadband contract ends in January next year, so by then 2 Degrees should have their own plans available.

What makes you think that? Both Vodafone and Telecom typically have up to 6 E1's (12Mbps) for most sites that don't have fibre running to them. This is enough for voice and 7.2Mbps HSPA.

I have used Vodafone's 3G service many times around the country, it either switches back to 2G or runs very very slow when it is 3G. I used to own a Black Vodem Pro and found it unbearably annoying how it would go back to 2g and then to 3g and then it would be too slow for general use.

Have you used anything other than a Vodem? The Vodem has always been a lemon so your problem may well be with the device rather than the network.

Hi, cannot comment on the Black Vodem, but my experience with Vodas 3G 900MHz services has been very positive. I rarely if ever shift back to 2G even in some quite remote areas.

Which part of the country? I've found vodafone to be very fast and reliable around Tauranga, Hamilton, Hawkes Bay and Rotorua but have very slow speeds in auckland cbd.

One the subject of new plans, I will be interested to see what's offered but like others am not holding out much hope of a drastic reduction in pricing

Have you tried locking the Vodem to "3G only"? That will take care of any falling back (the Vodem hunts for the strongest signal - if that is GPRS, it'll drop to GPRS speeds).

We have plenty of backhaul, thanks for asking.

Cheers

Paul

I have used VF 3G with the Vodem Pro and about 3x different HSPA mobile phones. I actually tried it in Hamilton last month, poor result too =[

Hmm, i'm hoping to be surprised, but I doubt it :P i'm currently on the $10 for 100mb/month plan. Some more flexible pricing would be nice, but i'm not holding my breath.

voda would be very silly to drop data prices any sort of meaningful amount. All it will do is cause telecom to drop theirs the same amount, and so neither will gain any market share and all they will have done is shrunk their own ARPU and not gained any new customers.

If you read the article Eric Hertz points out, probably quite rightly, that Vodafone is most likely anticipating that 2 Degrees will eventually shake up the market in the same way that they did with their agressive prepaid calling rates.

Who says it's only to gain market share?

Dropping prices grows revenue as it encourages growth of data services. While it might reduce revenue for some high use data users it encourages greater customer update of data and higher ARPU.

about 8 weeks before Christmas I was doing testing around many places in Waikato and got average 2 to 4 mbps down and 1 mbps up using a HSPA modem

One place I was testing right outside a Geekzone members house in Te Rapa and was getting 4 mbps down and 1.6 up
