My prior post only applies to the handoff link or last mile connection.

There will still be some congestion issues on certain exchanges, the best option here is to contact the Helpdesk. They'll ask you to do some speed testing on and off peak. If exchange congestion is seen we'll log a fault with Telecom, who'll raise it in the weekly congestion meetings.

It depends on the severity of the congestions as to when they'll address it. If it's causing major latency problems and extremely slow throughput they usually address it fairly quick. If it's not too bad it could take some time to address.

Good thing is it will be slightly easier to spot exchange congestion with the change to the handoff link.

One way to sell fibre is to cripple copper. Just my conspiracy theory. It is great to see there are people driving copper and providing feedback.

This is really interesting. Does this relaxing apply to all ISP's using the same Telecom Wholesale system or have they just made this change for Xnet?

The change only applies to Xnet, any other ISP would have to raise the matter with their respective Service Delivery Manager @ Telecom Wholesale.

I think it's time to jump ship. It's the ping time that's the killer. DNS resolution takes several seconds.

Raised a ticket with Xnet for the speed problem - it was closed a couple of hours later, no explanation.

Here's the thing. Xnet were great when they were the new upstart. Now they may as well be Telecom - they got too popular too fast, & their "service" delivery sux. Actually, it doesn't, but I don't think I can post what I really think about it.

Fibre to the door! Bah! Sort out our copper circuits & I'll be happy!

Off peak speeds are fine:

(you'll note that I get up EARLY just to get some internets)
Trouble is, I have to work in the evenings, and this is just making it impossible.

Of course it COULD be...except I'm connected to the same exchange that's been getting a lot of publicity lately in the local papers about the great connectivity speed all the locals are getting! And according to Telecom Wholesale, our cabinet was upgraded last July...so I have no hope!

The biggest issue for me - besides speed so slow I can't work - is the attitude of the Xnet supporrt desk. I raised a ticket for them to look into the speed issue. 2 hours later it was closed without any explanation.

I really am at the point of having nothing else to try but another provider. I'll give the XNet support desk one last chance to explain the closed ticket...

Just finished griping to xnet support. The guy I was talking to said "...looks like congestion on our network..."

Think that might have been a slip.

Basically the answer was "Tough luck"

Does this seem like a breach of contract? I know they say "Best effort", but the do call it Broadband. I might have to look in to this!

Interestingly, FCC defines broadband as > 768K

Yes it is, I was just having a bit of fun with the response/info.

Can't confirm any exact speeds as it varies, all I can confirm is we've managed to apply enough pressure to see an increase in capacity on the handoff link.

You were correct with 32kbps - in other words bugger all :)

Erm, isn't it a guarenteed minimum 32kbps per connection (over a period of 15 minutes or something) but the policing on the link isn't strict? i.e if you have spare capacity on the handover then connections can take advantage of it assuming there is capacity between the DSLAM > Handover?

Not seen any Wholesale informers regarding a change to the UBA regulated product so a bit confused as to what you can have changed?

I doubt anyone on a cabinet would have "base" backhaul issues, most have ~300 connections per cabinet and 1Gbit backhaul as I understand it.

For handover links I heard in March they (Telecom wholesale) made an interim change to help resolve issues with hand over links.

Before:
32kbps x (number of current connections plus forecast growth for three months), recalcuated every three months

After:
32kbs x (number of current connections plus forcast growth for six months), recalculated every three months.

Cabinet is RDB/AX (Red Beach). Upgraded in July 2009 - which is when I finally made it off the waiters list, after just over 6 months!

I'll try it. I'm not going to watch it finish, though. I need to get to bed befor 4.00am!! :-)

I even looked to see if I could get VDSL - I was willing to pay. :-(

Can't get any of the local wireless providers, there are damn trees everywhere!

I'm looking at nznet as a possibility - they advertise less congestion, although given the Telecom handover, I don't see how that's possible.
