1: You're not comparing apples with apples. Those are special prices from VF Aus versus normal prices from VF NZ.
2: Our current offer includes 3GB of data and 1,000PXT a month. You've not mentioned that.
3: Unlimited isn't unlimited. It's (as has been said several times) unlimited*.

Are the prices listed on the VFAU site actually on special/sale? I've got a few friends in AU who've bought the ~$80 plan with $0 up front back in Feb. If only we had that deal! are we likely to get anything like that over here?
As a regular traveller to Aussie I have to say iphone ownership over there is far greater than here.

I doubt MTR regulation will have any impact on the (lack of) sign up subsidy... At the end of the day the cheapest way to get an iphone is front up with the cash at apple.co.nz and shop round for a decent plan, the out of the box ones aren't in the best interests of the consumer.

I think pricing in NZ can be reduced with more/better competition but you have to be realistic and accept there are some serious limitations in our situation.

ahh, well non urban area maintenance/setup / whatever costs still apply to the provider, so they are very relevant.
NZ has a few major issues. 1) Lack of population - this will never go away. Economics 101. 2) Geography - NZ requires 2x the amount of investment to service the same land size as most other countries due to our hilly landscape. 3) lack of competition
I feel that there is defiantly an equilibrium where prices will fall to will be reached in the next 24 months. Telcos have to invest a huge amount to get where they are today. We expect the best 3G (soon 4G LTE) yet we don't expect to pay for it...
But then again, the less you charge the more people will use the service. I would pay 2x what I am right now if I received 2x the value.
