Good points, Niel. I've been with Xnet and VFx for quite some time too & see no compelling reason at this stage to uproot. Still, it's good to keep Xnet at least interested in what the competition are up to! ;)

XNet also does not move you to new plans, they just stop selling the old plans. Only if you change your plan you loose your old plan (makes sense) and can't go back. There are still people on free national data (as far as I know). I'm still on a free static IP. Recent data cost increases applied only to new customers or if you changed plans. I'm sticking around (unless the business model changes).

My 2c - can't beat the pay-as-you-go deal. Massive point of differentiation to other providers. In my view it's the other providers that need to step up to this, not the other way round. There's also the ease with which you can change your data cap on Xnet - a few mouse clicks does it and it's instant.

I find these days people buy usually buy solely on price, and quality. Service is often overlooked. It isn't helped by these comparisn websites, that are mainly comparing price and features, and not the service or where that service is based. That is why I think there are such a huge number of complaints now about these low cost providers in many areas. eg airline companies, isps etc. They have to cut costs somewhere.

I have been with Xnet for about 5 yrs maybe a little more (or less) and been pretty happy with them even when they were having some terrible speed issues.

My problem or complaint really is not just about them but sure with NDSL you drop tjhe phone line but pay $35 - $50ish more so your not really saving much at all. None of the NDSL providers have done anything that I can remember that can even resemble trying to be competitive with this product line.

Orcon have come out and offered either free National calling +5 gb or 30gb if you don't care about the calling.

For a low end data user the national calling is good or for a what most would say medium user 30gb is also good.

Of course for those who may have just seen Slingshot have released new DSL plans with finally some data caps that more high end users can't shy away from. In fact once you go past the 50 gig plan you are pretty much better off ditching your NDSL plan and going retro with a landline and I say this as someone on the Torrent Plan with Xnet so getting 75gig free each month.

I do like the pay for what you use of Xnet and the customer service (when needed) has always been top notch as well.

What I would like is now that two of the countries (supposed) top ISP's are starting to get competitive what are we going to see in the near future from not just Xnet but other ISP's as well.

One last thing to remember and this is a big thing here people before you jump ship with any ISP check on how long of a contract your stuck to. 2yrs is a long time when Fibre is around the corner (and for some it's only a few months away in the grand scheme of FTTH).

I have been happy with Xnet as well; and have been with them for some time now - sat back while speeds were appauling, even upped my plan and threw them some more $$$.
You are all right in that the ability to pay as you go, no contract, good service are all shining qualities; but they still have to be balanced and competitve.
I am a pretty basic user. I have a phone line that I use occassionally to do toll calls, and my dsl while important to me is not used to a huge extent (5GB / month); so for me the savings are quite reasonable if I were to move to another provider.

So yeah Xnet is great, and I will continue to support them as long as I can justify taking the hit...time will tell how many more rounds I can sustain I suppose :)

However, he said a number of internet users were saying the law meant they no longer had any use for large monthly data caps.

I guess under such circumstances, Xnet's pay-as-you go model gains a further slight advantage.

It is about time bandwidth gets freed up for more useful stuff. But probably people will instead turn to free legit porn streaming. Or the same will happen as with driving with cell phones - after a while people return to old habits especially since it is only on the 3rd notice your connection is dropped and then eventually the old notices get cancelled.

Yea I think Xnet needs to re-evaluate their pricing a bit considering the others in the market. I like their model of pay as you use but couldn't resist switching about 6 months back to Orcon due the pricing difference. I'd like to switch back to Xnet but it doesn't stack up currently with the pricing.

-1 . I'm with telcom, previously vodafone, and with both of those I like that I could max out my downloads on the last day of allowance and get 'free' data. I'm a minority though, most people will not be so active on this.
