I wonder if we will get some different pricing models through for VFX now?

http://www.orcon.net.nz/external/genius/campaigns_landing_genius.html

Their $70 a month looks pretty attractive given it includes national calling and 5GB of data or 30GB of data

You can have price, quality and service, but not all 3 at the same time. I have a friend who left Orcon because they failed on service. As an example he added e-mail aliases for his kids, and Orcon would automatically set the last activated alias as the primary account contact. The only way the get the original e-mail address as account contact was to seperate into individual e-mail accounts, which he did not want.

I'm sure XNet will adjust pricing and plans as/if required. One of their points of difference is you only pay for the data you use, another is they've run VoIP for a very long time and are world class.

Yeah I hear you - but all things considered for a basic user with minimal complexities the package is a pretty sharp offering...has me thinking....

Yeah, I`ve been looking around a bit tonight as well, Xnet fusion is not looking so good at the mo.

I`m thinking Snap naked+ italk would suit me better (Orcon genius not available my area).
Snap voted best isp this year+cheaper data+free TVNZ & Youtube/google for $2, italk has 500 free minutes.

Everyone (or at least worldnet, slingshot, telecom) seems to be doing deals at the mo, is there something there not telling us.

If you can get broadband you can get Genius, the address checker on the orcon website is broken though and will tell many people they can't sign up when in fact they can.

Back on track... i think Fusion and Genius are aimed at too completely different markets.

Fusion is for people with know how to install/set up VOIP and want to save on a standard phone line and get good braodband with it as well.

Genius is for people with little or no technical knowledge and just want to use the internet and make phone calls without worrying about what is happening at the backend. It is great for these people as their is a good saving over a regular telephone line.

I see no reason for VFX to lower prices at all, they are already great value as it is.

Fusion doesnt need any tech know how, they provision the VOIP for you unless you opt for Open VFX.

Genius and Fusion are the exact same product aimed at the exact same market. The only difference is the Genius box has a DECT base station built in and comed with a DECT phone. With Fusion you need to plug your existing analogue phone into the RJ11 port on an ATA, something you can also do with Genius.

Exactly.
Genius comes with a phone (Fusion doesn't). Genius is at the same price point ($70 per month), however is bundled with free national calling AND 5GB of data OR 30GB of data. Sure there is still Open VFX which is a USP for Xnet I suppose, but for the standard user it looks as though Xnet is getting considerably out of step here with the other players in the market.

I am not a massive user of bandwidth and certainly not a complex user of Fusion (if the phone works - great); but if I were to switch to Genius I would be looking at saving anywhere from $120 upwards a year...nothing to be sneezed at.

I would like to stay with Xnet as have been a subscriber for many many years, but in terms of a value price point it is pretty hard to ignore.

The overage overage rates on the Genius plan are $2 per GB don't forget, that's basically double XNet's rate...

Yeah but the base packages come bundled with 5GB of traffic to kick you off....so for a user that doesn't necessarily download much then this is a far better option AND you get free national calling....likewise you can even opt for the 30GB of data and this puts the plan far ahead for the average user.
Comparing the Genius against VFX; the Genius plan shines....VFX not so much, except for the Open VFX users or high data users...for the main population I rekon most people would not even look any closer at Xnet/VFX...maybe that is what they want?

It just seems as though Xnet have released their product to the market and then made no adjustment to remain competitve and attractive even after the market has become more saturated with competing products.

I had been wondering this too. It was mildly amusing in the early part of the 2000's when internet actually got more expensive, and grandfathered plans were better than their more modern offerings, leading people to want to stay on older plans (which they'd been lured with to sign up to a particular provider?). It would reflect positive development for NZ internet if the older plans were actually worse then newer ones - yay!

In this context, I hope Xnet remains as a good deal, rather than falling behind with the older plans. However, what I'd hate to see them over subscribe and under perform, as has been the wont of NZ ISP's over the past decade. I haven't churned for a few years, so am not sure of the state of the market at present - and that's a positive reflection of my experiences with Xnet, TBH.

One unique positive aspect of Xnet, as far as I know, remains that you pay-as-you-go with no limits. Sure the 30GB plan might be good - but what if you only use 10GB that month? 20GB of unused data. If you only use 3, but you're still on the 30GB plan. If you're on the 5GB plan, but that month you use 20GB? Bah - who needs that kind of hassle. Pay as you use is good.

I've gotta say I was looking at getting VFX, as I've been very happy with Xnet internet and very unhappy with Telecom phoneline. But that Orcon deal is pretty good with those unlimited National calls.

Snap 10Gb = $65
Orcon 30Gb = $70
Xnet 0Gb = $71.50

Step up to the mark Xnet....

^ Yup there are some considerable savings to be made.
Although have spoken to Xnet and their are no plans to make any changes - looks like feet will have to start walking for anyone to take notice.....hard to stay loyal when the provider appears to be milking us

Orcon locks you in to a 2 year contract. You can not use your own hardware, so you are stuck with their hardware and you do not own it (sounds like Sky). It might look good now, but in 2 years it might not look as good and you can't upgrade (VoIP or modem). Voice messages to e-mail is an option. I have not checked what else you pay extra for, but with XNet essentially the only extra is if you want to filter phone calls and a few other advanced features.

Snap does not do VoIP. You can add 2Talk, but can do with any other provider as well. XNet used to have the lowest data cost and I think they are still the only ones that charge actual data (not blocks). Speed was tops also. This made them popular for torrent downloads, so the speed went down and they became unpopular. So if currently Snap is popular, guess what will happen to them...

XNet does not advertise their services, so consumers are probably not their main focus. No need for XNet to take notice: get rid of the mega downloaders, retain the customers that are more interested in reliability and solid service. My wife and I are on the internet all night every night and use less than 4MB per month. This includes You Tube.

My 2c, I've been around a while (like a number of loyals here) and seen people come and go. It is always cost or speed.
