Ham: Maybe the "things around the corner" should have been announced at the same time?

Yep agree as well, I don't like some companies (and vodafone is good at it) does not say what the replacement product will be and how much it will be.

So you start out thinking it will be an upgrade from the 250megs to 1gig of data on smart plans but then vodafone comes out with a "data add on" of $20 for a extra gig. People then get mad because vodafone only released it in the last few weeks before the dead line.

Just tweeted by VodafoneNZ at 1622 - this link offers all the information you need:

http://forum.vodafone.co.nz/topic/8453-3gb-data-bundles/

To be fair - NBR broke with the news & now Vodafone have officially made their statement.

No need to be fair ;) credit was given to NBR in the first post in this topic.

As for Vodafone's post... "Vodafone has some exciting new offers in the wings, so watch this space"

An offer is only exciting for the company. Customer won't get excited moving from "free" to "paid" ;)

Or they'll just move.... I'm sure a lot of customers are thinking about what 2d or telecom will come up with in the next few weeks/months. No point hanging around waiting if someone comes up with something decent before Vodafone announce the "next big thing".

I see telecom have already jumped in with some deal.

But in the meantime - if you sign up to a Smart Plan from now - until the end of the month - you get 3GB of Data & 1,000Pxt for absolutely NOTHING extra - I think that is a great myself.

Not to mention, it's been happening for the last two years. None of the other providers offer anything remotely similar.

I could have a whinge as i only signed up a month odd ago but in reality 6mths notice gives me ample time to prepare and worst case scenario atthis time I can either quit my plan at a cost less than the handset subsidy already recieved or migrate across to another more suitable VF plan if such a beast is available :P

michaelmurfy: A free hug from John with every 24mo contract taken up.

You'd expect more than a hug after 2 years wouldn't you? It's more likely to be extra purchasable data bundles...

Ok then 3 hugs and a kiss (no tongue)

How long do I have to sign up for to get tongue? 36 months?

Tongue is if you buy John a coffee - and take up a 36mo contract on a Talkzone 36/36/0

...but only for the first 6 months of your 24 month contract (no option not to take a contract)
What are you going to do for the remaining 18 months when you only have 250MB to use? and equivalent plans on 2D or XT give at least 500MB and often 1-2GB for the same price.

Damn, I was thinking of signing up to a smart plan soon.

Question: I really want to sign up and take advantage of this 6 month 3GB and double minutes thing but what I really dont want to do is be stuck on the 250mb for the next 18 months (not nearly enough)

Do you recommend just buying it now or sticking around and seeing what the new plan is? ( i will move to 2degrees if voda doesnt announce a good cost effective data plan soon to replace this)

Fair call, I agree with you - but you do have 6 months of 3GB Data & 1,000Pxt (25% of the plan duration) for no extra cost - which is better than nothing. They could of ended the promotion in 30 days, but they didn't.

I'm sure they will sharpen their Base Plan Data offerings, which I completely agree are far too low & not at all realistic in today's world.

Time will tell as to what they do offer & they have advised something new is on the way, so let's wait & see what that is.

Until then - flaunt the 3GB of Data offer I say - they said in the Vodafone statement that "although thousands of customers are enjoying mobile data, very few have got close to using the full 3GB limit".

I say let's prove them wrong :-)

I really think voda ought to have a bit more transparency with this. Give us an end date on the 3gb, and show us the new alternative that will be for offer. As someone signing up for a 24 month contract worth close to $1000, i would like to make an informed decision rather than taking guesses or risks in the dark.

Just a suggestion... Hopefully there will be some overlap period.

It's entirely up to you what you want to do.

No one, other than Vodafone staff know what the new permanent offer will be - it's a gamble either way.

Personally - I think the Base Data Plans will improve, to keep pace with the competition & I also think they will offer cheaper Data add ons (again, to keep pace with the competition) - but hey, I am only guessing here.

johnr: Yes the 3Gig offer is coming to an end

But as always we will have something new coming and sorry I can't talk about it yet

Thanks John

I heard through the grape vine that this something includes a counter offer to 2degrees pricing, with nearly unlimited (or a HUGE amount of minutes) to select people/groups and that it's to be released in October sometime.

Would be a bit silly to resign or sign up to a Vodafone contract before October.
