Mobile data too? I have one month left on contract and 10 days to jump ship to vodafone... Would love to know about mobile data asap, please!

Hi blakamin,

What are you looking for in terms of data?

Cheers, Gary

I'm sitting on a 90GB plan right now - throw another 20GB on the plan to up it to 110GB and I'd die a very happy man.

In all due respects your plans should be going up 5GB every 6 months or otherwise they'll begin to look like a joke as the average person realise what high speed internet allows them to do.

In terms of mobile data, that is even a bigger rip-off especially when it comes to casual rates; 1GB for $20 would be great value but I doubt I'll see that happen in my lifetime (it would have to be on Telecom because Vodafone coverage is horrible in the Hutt Valley).

And I jumped. Now on VF.

Not because TC wouldn't help, (they went out of their way to try and make me happy)  but because of a seperation.

I'd personally hope that they do increase their data caps.

Our flat's usages since moving in February have been all over the show but here's a copypaste.

04 Aug 2011 - Today          - 116.96 GB
04 Jul 2011 - 03 Aug 2011  - 187.87 GB
04 Jun 2011 - 03 Jul 2011  - 145.91 GB
04 May 2011 - 03 Jun 2011  - 165.66 GB
04 Apr 2011 - 03 May 2011  - 132.37 GB
04 Mar 2011 - 03 Apr 20111  - 45.83 GB

and our plan is

LightSpeed 90GUp to 15 Mbps / 2 Mbps   - 90G - $139.952G  - packs at $2.95 per pack

We're seriously considering going back to ADSL and going to someone like Xnet which would give us a much cheaper bill rather than the $284.31 (excluding phone) we paid last month.  We may get a 1.2MB/s instead of 1.8MB/s download and a slightly slower upload but with the ever pending VDSL being upgraded to our area shortly...whats going to be more cost effective?

I hope I can be forgiven for pointing out (yet again) that "watch this space", "soon", etc, from TelstraClear means "at least six months" or "never" and/or "not anywhere near as good as you'd hoped". It happens every single time. And I have pointed it out every time I've had the opportunity to do so here on Geekzone, and I've yet to be wrong. I'd love to be wrong. Please, TelstraClear, put egg on my face. Prove me wrong. Just this once.

"Cough"

So I am guessing never. It's been a nearly a month and in this day and age that is longer than "You won?t have long to wait".

I was just thinking exactly the same thing.  "Coming soon" seems to be "In the next year or so" for TC.

I switched to TC only a few months ago and the week after I made the switch my old ISP, Vodafone, increased all their data caps by 50% at no cost.  Beginning to think I made a bad move by moving to TC...

2degrees have 1GB for $20 in auckland, christchurch, wellngton, queenstown and some other new areas.
Their network speeds are a bit slower than vodafone or telecom but it works just fine for tethering and facebook and to read the news on the bus to school in the mornings.

Hah. Since when was integrity important in business?

The plans were last updated 1 Oct 2010 so I'm hoping for news early next month - if not Vodafone is looking pretty good right now...

Current promo: "Sign up to any Broadband and Phoneline package on a new 24 month term before
15 October 2011 and we'll give you the first two months base package charges for free." = New plans on the 15th?

Only just saw this, but: I hope not! It should be doubling each year, at least. Butter's Law of Photonics says that the amount of data coming out of an optical fiber is doubling every nine months (line stolen from Wikipedia) - "Thus, the cost of transmitting a bit over an optical network decreases by half every nine months." Furthermore, from this paper

The main conclusion we draw from the data and arguments of the previous sections is that Internet traffic is likely to continue doubling each year for the next decade or so.

(As an aside, that paper was written 10 years ago, so it would be interesting to see if its prediction was correct)

If traffic costs go down and amount of traffic goes up, then naturally data caps have to increase at the same rate - otherwise, we will, by definition, be falling further behind the rest of the world on average in terms of the amount of data we consume and produce over the internet.

10GB extra a year (5GB every 6 months) wouldn't be anywhere near enough.
