Hi, my 2c, the DSL side of your connection is I would suggest 99% not the issue, my guess is the level of traffic capacity TCL are providing to your area of the Telecom Wholesale network, suggest you badger TCL about that, good luck or change ISP, Telecom retail sounds good.

From what i've read on a few websites today isn't low Attenuation supposed to be a good thing on a broadband connection? Telstra Clear have told me: "Something else that is puzzling on your connection is the fact that you have a very low attenuation which may lead to communication problems which then translate to slow speeds on occasion."

You have a very low attenuation - generally this is a very good thing, although some modems have problems connecting at very low levels such as yours. Usually making sure you have the latest firmware for your modem resovles any issue like that.

there it go's again! the google ads on this site are not displaying. well the bottom one is. And this is using my vodafone connection. When using my snap internet connection I have not come across any of these problems.

Hi all,

The topic of some sites being slow to load is covered in another thread. As we've noted there:

Customers may be experiencing intermittent issues with slow loading for some overseas websites. This is an issue with the websites concerned and their traffic routing preferences. It occurs outside both our network and we have no control over the routing. The issue is intermittent and appears to also impact customers of other New Zealand internet service providers.

Although the cause of the problem is outside our network, on behalf of our customers we’ve asked our international traffic providers to raise this with the website companies concerned. As long as this issue exists, we will continue to point out to those websites the impact on our customers and the less-than-satisfactory experience they will be having when visiting the websites.

I suggest you change provider.

I am not one to usually give this advice, and I am a (happy) TelstraClear cable user. But in this case you might get better service on another ISP.

I will leave at that.

I think it has something to do with being on UBA, maybe you were on UBS before you switched. I remember reading another thread a while ago where finally the guy got his provider to switch him back to UBS and he started getting the speeds his modem was actually syncing with :S

Are you sure you're not getting this story around thee wrong way?

UBA, and the newer EUBA plans offer significant advantages over old UBS plans. I'm not sure if TCL would even have people on UBS still.

Anybody who wants the best performance from their ISP should be looking for an ISP offering EUBA, as this also (at present) has no end user dimensioning.

Yes sorry i just found the thread i was referring to, the guy had some weird bandwidth issue that was resolved when he was changed to BUBA, so my previous statement is nonsense

Maybe try increase your attenuation to see what happens, you could connect an extension cable between your modem and jackpoint but this may make your dsl sync unstable. I'm not sure if this will help though, just a thought in reponse to the claim they made.

Another thought, if your speeds are intermittent, and your actual sync is good but speeds don't reflect this. Maybe your line is suffering from intermittent noise burst. Noise Margin15.1 dB15.9 dB, Normally adsl requires about 6db of noise margin before losing dsl sync. If your line had a short burst at a particular frequency normally your modem stops using that channel to transmit bits so you get a lower sync.

I think what happens is that after dsl synchronisation occurs your modem negotiates which channels are available to use for data transmission based on SNR margins in each channel.  If at some point a channels SNR margin is less than 6db for adsl1 and 3db for adsl2 it then cannot use that channel to send any bits so it will then use any available channels to transmit the data.

If this happened it would result in lower bandwidth when you test the connection speed. Not sure if this is happening for your connection but its possible.  I suppose a faulty filter could cause a similar problem or a faulty modem but if this has all been ruled out then its in the ISP's court.
