Doesn't seem to be happening everywhere - admittedly I've only been using my phone around the Auckland region lately.

Like I said earlier it is not happening everywhere: its been working for me from Halcombe to Wellington and Dunedin to Oamaru.

Gobit: G'day Folks

The cell site name does currently show up on my mother's Nokia 1100.

I can't recall it ever displaying on my iPhone 4 when it's on 2G.

Cheers, Gobit

iPhone 4 doesn't show this normally but if you go into the Field Test modem you can see neighbor cells and their Cell IDs then send this to a service (like Google) to compute your approximate location.

DjShadow: an OT question, how come this doesn't work on 3G?

Because there is actually no real point to the service, so no reason to deploy it on WCDMA. It ultimately does incrase battery consumption so is nothing but a novelty factor. There are plenty of applications that can give you more more detailed network stats anyway.

Its just not enabled for 3G, Just another licenced feature you need to pay for but provides really no benefit

quickymart: So is it gone from 2G? :(

This is the last time I am going to say this: it is working (just maybe not around Auckland). Nobody said it was gone from 2G.

quickymart: I thought I must have done something to my phone for a second, glad to know it's not just me who noticed it :)

Out of curiosity why do you still use GSM? Do you have a GSM only phone?

isn't it obvious? WCDMA 2100 doesn't get good in building coverage, I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace and always have it looked to 2G even though I have Push E-mail. Uses less battery to.

Clearly not "all over Auckland" - it's not working for me.

Working for me in Glenfield

Thread bump:
Was in Wairau Park tonight at the movies and my wife's phone (a Nokia 5310) was very clearly displaying the cellsite name (in this case, it said "Glenfield"). My phone (a Nokia 6121) said nothing.
I tested this by turning cell info off on my phone, powercycling it and reactivating it. This restored it for a while, but then it stopped working again.
My question is, is this likely to be the phone (which is newer than hers) or the SIM card (which is older than hers)? If the latter, can I get it upgraded? I got it in 2002 when SIM2 was new but haven't changed it since then - and from time to time I do get "SIM card registration failed".

Is your phone subscribed to channel 050?

The cell broadcast feature has many different channels - but most networks use 050 for their Cell ID's

I think it's a direct feature on my Nokia; I've never had to enter 050 before and it worked perfectly - but cheers, I'll take a look anyway.

I should have added - for JohnR: does this sound like the SIM card?
