(this might be one for John):

Has Cell Info Display been turned off on the GSM network? I always have this function turned on on my phone and have noticed lately it's not showing the cellsite name, no matter where I go about the place. Same thing on my wife's phone, so it's probably not a handset issue.

Has it been turned off for some reason, and if so, will it be turned back on in the future? I always found it interesting to see where the signal was coming from (geek).

Thanks in advance :)

Yes indeed, I've tried turning the feature off/on on my phone to be sure and powercycled it as well, but to no avail. I travel from the Shore to Auckland CBD every day and haven't noticed it for a while now, but I'll keep an eye on it tomorrow and see if it comes up.

Thanks John :)
I normally get "Birkenhead" here at home but haven't seen that one for ages (a couple of months maybe?)

Strange I travelled recently from Halcombe to Wellington then Dunedin to Palmerston and it worked all the way.

Tested this morning, not one cellsite observed while travelling from the North Shore all the way into Auckland CBD...same thing coming back home. Maybe it's only been turned off in Auckland?

Any ideas John? Did your testing turn up anything?

Just locked my phone on GSM, and tried it myself here in Parnell. It is not working for me either (at the moment anyway)! Recently, I tried looking for cellsite information here in Auckland, and never saw the usual cellsite information coming up like I remember it used to (sometimes I found I had to make a short call, to get it to work), hence was suspicious myself, that maybe the sites were no longer broadcasting.  Then again, the information doesn't always show up anyway, so I thought no more of it - until now!

I thought I must have done something to my phone for a second, glad to know it's not just me who noticed it :)

Out of curiosity why do you still use GSM? Do you have a GSM only phone?

I locked my phone on GSM yesterday, and paid more attention to see if any cellsite broadcasts names showed up. None did! I was at Orewa yesterday - didn't see anything there, and this morning here in Parnell, there is still nothing displayed. It is no longer working - at least here in the Auckland area!

No, mine is 3G and 2G, but the battery lasts longer on 2G, so it's only ever on 3G for data. The Cell Info Display was a 2G feature I noticed that was missing some time ago.

G'day Folks

The cell site name does currently show up on my mother's Nokia 1100.

I can't recall it ever displaying on my iPhone 4 when it's on 2G.

Cheers, Gobit
