Yes he is serious and have you seen the house for sale on trademe Waiheke Island for $33,000,000? I can't afford it so I will be contacting the ComCom today

The device is locked to Vodafone because all the traffic is zero rated. That's because ANY mobile on Vodafone (or roaming to Vodafone) can connect to it, using the owner's broadband. If it wasn't locked to Vodafone the owner could be pay through the tubes (literally) for others to have Vodafone coverage.

Yes I thought it through. That's like saying the TiVo should only work with telecom because the data user by it is zero-rated when really th TiVo can work with any NZ provider. Also, it was my understanding that it was not everybodys devices that could connect as you had to manually add the IMEIs into the device.

Again you are twisting things to fits your argument. No one ever said the TiVo works only with Telecom, because it works with any ISP, since the start.

There's no IMEI locking. I tested even my Amazon Kindle 3G with a Sure Signal.

Then you would run to the ComCom cause the device has a IMEI lock

Just some further INFO on this comment, The New Zealand Sure Signal units do as well but Vodafone chose not to enable this feature as the traffic is zero rated

johnr: It's locked out to other ISPs at the moment for more than one reason. There is nothing stopping the other carriers in NZ launching the service.

1) This device connects back into our Core 3G network (security)

2) Quality of service for the Sure signal traffic end to end

3) traffic over the ADSL connection on Vodafone is zero rated and does not come off the customer data allocation

4) Fault checking if the sure signal traffic goes over another network how do we look into issues with the end customer, The customer rings there ISP and says my sure signal is not working. What is that ISP going to say?

Understand where you're coming from but I don't think that's really a fair comment. I'll use my scenario for example.

Where I am in Mt Eden, there is no coverage inside my place, but plenty of coverage outside. As much as I like entertaining the neighbours every time I get a phone call with having to dash outside, this really isn't fun.

Having a Sure Signal in my lounge means that whatever crappy construction my place has, that blocks the nearest cell tower, I still get good coverage. As I understand it only extends 10-20m, so it's not like a COW sitting in my house.

I'm pleased that my mobile teleco offers such a service, as without it, I'd be up the creek thing without the wooden thing.

+1, My parent's live in a dip and they have great coverage outside on the road.
Sure signal stops them diverting cellphones to their landline every time they go home.

I have the same issue (or I should say "had"; my newest phone has much better reception than my previous one) and what I always wanted was a "repeater" that could just sit in the kitchen where I have good service and repeat the signal to the rest of the house, with no reliance on broadband. Thankfully with my new phone I don't have to worry about it anymore :)

Did you go from an iPhone4 to 4S?
