Anyone else get this email this afternoon?

Great news! You will soon receive a Sure Signal upgrade. This free upgrade means you’ll enjoy the great mobile reception you’re used to with Sure Signal in a sleek new device, plus it’ll prepare you for quicker data speeds on your mobile with our next network upgrade in the new year. The new device will be couriered out to you in the next couple of weeks. So keep an eye out for the courier and you’ll soon be enjoying all the benefits of our new and improved Sure Signal service.

I'm curious as to why...

Yes, but "free upgrade" is something very unusual. Are you sure the old model wasn't screwing up something, like interfering with the actual mobile network, then offering an "upgrade" makes sense?

"it’ll prepare you for quicker data speeds on your mobile with our next network upgrade"
This almost makes it sound as though the new device will be some sort of repeater.

I don't know, maybe for areas with lower signal. Let me emphasize my original post again. johnr should be able to give us some more definitive answers tomorrow.

Conceptually this product sounds like a good way to make the customer pay to upgrade the network in his/her area. That said, if it was $100 and worked with any broadband provider it would be attractive to many I'm sure. I have two, no three family members in Vodafone black holes so it does have potential....

Maybe its worth getting the ComCom involved due to the soft-locking of the device?

You really need to get this ComCom thing out of your head. It's locked out to other ISPs at the moment for more than one reason. There is nothing stopping the other carriers in NZ launching the service.

1) This device connects back into our Core 3G network (security)

2) Quality of service for the Sure signal traffic end to end

3) traffic over the ADSL connection on Vodafone is zero rated and does not come off the customer data allocation

4) Fault checking if the sure signal traffic goes over another network how do we look into issues with the end customer, The customer rings there ISP and says my sure signal is not working. What is that ISP going to say?

Are you serious with this comment? Did you think it through?

The device is locked to Vodafone because all the traffic is zero rated. That's because ANY mobile on Vodafone (or roaming to Vodafone) can connect to it, using the owner's broadband. If it wasn't locked to Vodafone the owner could be pay through the tubes (literally) for others to have Vodafone coverage.
