I was referring to the fact that it's currently impossible to move from Vodafone PrePay to Vodafone on-account while retaining the same phone number. Moving between prepaid and account plans without a change of phone number has been possible on Telecom for as long as I can remember.

April the 1st is the introduction date for mandated number portability between telcos.

I beleive that's Vodafones own fault for the way they originally setup their billing systems. They would have known customers wouldn't want to change their mobile number when changing from PrePay to On Account, if anything, it would make it more liekly for the customer who is changing, to go across to a different network if they had to change their number anyway.

Also remember this was about 12 or so years ago and having a mobile phone alone was a big thing.

As Johnr said it was Bellsouth back then and onaccount was mainly business and prepay was a whole new system for the masses and setup rather differently.

The business model would have been completly different and prob not able to mixed.

Prepay and onaccount are on different billing platforms and systems and dont forget Telecom own the numbering system in NZ and allocate the number ranges.

Also for Teleom number portabilty to work they have to have a signed aggrement with Vodafone and vice versa so both of them have been working on this for a few years as its no small task to get this working and both would launch at the same time.

I will be very disappointed if that is $6 for unlimited Texting/Calling a month for ONLY 1 person.
I am saying this because i think was thinking that it is time for Vodafone to get smart and get more spending per its prepay customers. For example, I think that the average bill for those who are on account is about $60 per month and they do use that number internally as an indicator (that's why they are keen to lift it up in the hopes that it will generate more gap for margin).
At present, I think that the average bill for prepay customers is siginificantly lower than this (if not they should be using MotorMouth or on account)..... however... if you look at that Telcos do in Aust (just came back for a few day trip in Mel) that they are all doing Caps now for their Prepay... and I must admit, that is SMART! I mean that will lift the avg prepay spending by customer multi-folds if they allow UNLIMITED connections/mates to be hocked up @ $6 per month.

Also, if that is only ONE person which you can hock up to, it is less attractive then Telecom's deal where you can nomanate LAN/Mobile for $10 per number a month (for up to 5 numbers?) this is smart too, coz it will potentially increase the spending by customer by $20 - $30 a month! I mean Get REAL here, you don't only have 1 person to call.. yes, there must be 1 single person who u always call and text, but there must be MORE than that! =)

Just correct me if I am not right above and please express ur view if you think differently otherwise

Another? Here's the trick guys...... Nominate a calling card... Haha, think about it.... Often, if you use calling cards to call nationally, like Worldtel (for example) http://www.worldtel.co.nz/cgi-bin/wtel/read_country.pl?country=New+Zealand it's only $0.05/min... CHEAP! Basically means that with Bestmate, you'll get to call any landline for a flat fee of $6/mth and $0.05/min then.... Or, even overseas, USA, Canada, UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, japan, etc... All for $0.05/min too......

Hey, sounds good even as a landline replacement! For a equivalent $45/mth, you'll get 780 (26mins/day) national/international mins! Hmm, not bad at all......

**Additional note to mailmonster****...... Sorry I'm jumping the gun here... But potentially, if your best mate can be any number, and you can nominate a "calling card" to be your best mate, it'll be cheaper even than Telecom. Cause Telecom freedom is only $10 for every mobile-landline hookup.... But with Vodafone bestmate (speculated), you can potentially call many many landlines at quite a cheap rate!

May not be smart on Vodafone's side, it's like they're giving quite a lot of business to other communications companies then....

I would guess that vodafone would say your best mate would be an 021. IF they hadnt thought of someone picking a calling card as a best mate - they know now.

Thanks for the comments, I would always expect that the restriction to the speculated $6 per number would be on only 021 numbers (and not land line and def. not Telecom's [is it a few months yet that the Commerce Commission ordered to waive the "connection" from VF to Telecom's Landline and vice-versa?])

I guess the main reason for me to say this is because both free txt wk ends and take 10 are for 021 numbers, and that bestmate is aimed to built on this.

But that idea of your of picking up a calling card as a bestmate is quite interesting =)

It's fun anyhow.....

Haha, the calling card idea came when they had the "3min for 2hrs" promotion..... I just used that and was talking with my friend in the US for my drive all the way from Hamilton back to Auckland.. (with handsfree of course..)

I just got told by an incredibly unreliable contact that for just $10 a month Vodafone will let us send SMS messages and make phonecalls to as many Vodafone numbers as we want....
