Something else that will need to be addressed are the radio channels on the cable tv version of this. I’m at my parents place at the moment and they listen to RNZ National, I hear the announcers say where the station is available and they always mention Vodafone Cable TV. I’m thinking for those who get the new box where there are currently no radio channels that I could see and would be expecting the likes of RNZ National to be there. Of course the other option is to get iHeartRadio fully working.

This is definitely going to be worked on.

Looking forward to the 5.1 appearing on my Gen1 box - am I right in interpreting that this will only come in an update after the RWC, or is the update for the Gen1 box already done (I'm not at home to check)

Also, has Vodafone done any work with Logitech to get these devices added to the Harmony universal remote database?  I've manually done the IR code learning thing and it works OK, but it'd be nice to have an officially supported device in Harmony.

Thx.

PS @olof - nice to see your name pop up!

Good to be back on GZ! :-)

Yes, we will have the new software on Gen1 with Dolby Digital 5.1 as soon as we can. (Brown out for RWC is holding things up a bit.) We definitely realise how important 5.1 is to a lot of users. Going forward we plan to have the software releases synced between Gen1 and Gen2.

We are also looking at getting the VodafoneTV remote added to Logitech's database. Stay tuned!

Olof Olsson - my views are my own.

This is particularly important in (but not limited to) provincial areas who don't have many broadcast radio choices (My experience is Opunake - UFB, but only two FM radio stations.)
Many farms won't have good enough quality Internet for steaming video as a primary viewing source. Perhaps Vodafone could do some tests of the Fixed Wireless network further down the track?

Does the T-Box network give you any indication of the number of customers who use that device to listen to radio?

Edit - quoted the wrong previous post. Oops!

Has Vodafone contested in court whether this Gen2 Retail Television Video Recorder (TVR) is a DVR as there is a precedent for this in Singapore? A win in such a case would make this device significantly more useful in what it could record, resume recording or rewind?

i.e. from Wikipedia:

"Litigation against RecordTV.com's Cloud DVR
Cloud DVRs were launched in numerous countries but were inevitably challenged in court. In Singapore, RecordTV.com became the first Cloud DVR in the world to be declared legal in a landmark lawsuit where RecordTV.com, led by its CEO, Carlos Fernandes who fought Singapore's state owned broadcaster, MediaCorp. MediaCorp was represented by Drew and Napier CEO and Senior Counsel, Davinder Singh who cross-examined Carlos Fernandes over 3.5 days during the trial. RecordTV.com lost the lawsuit in the High Court of Singapore, only to have the ruling overturned at the Court of Appeals where the Court ruled in favour of RecordTV and awarded costs and damages. The litigation was declared to be a David vs. Goliath battle, by the Business Times, the main business newspaper owned by the Singapore Press Holdings. Carlos Fernandes was subsequently named as a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum. The case has become one of the most seminal cases in copyright law. William Patry and David Post both well known legal scholars in the area of copyright wrote about the case on their respective blogs prior to the appeal. The ruling was even cited at WIPO."

Wooo! Thanks very much @olof! This will make things easier for myself (WAF) and my parents when this happens.

How would this be in Vodafone's interest? Do you really think there is any financial upside for them in this?

Bought one of these today.  Setup was pretty quick and painless - except for pairing the remote via Bluetooth.  I have followed the instructions on screen, and also unplugged (restarted the box) and removed the batteries from the remote and also reset the remote as per the VTV Help but I can't get it to pair via Bluetooth. Any tips on what to do here?

It should just be a case of holding the yellow+3 buttons for a couple of seconds until the red light flashes on the remote's power button, then let go.

If you go to Settings->connected devices->remote control->remote status it will then tell you if it has paired / re-paired successfully.

Yep tried all that but no success. The red light flashes (both on the remote and the VFTV and then it stops and it still tells me to pair it. When I click on remote status it says it’s using infrared to control your Vodafone TV.

Spent 50 minutes this evening on the phone with Vodafone. They couldn’t work out why it’s not pairing either and have escalated it. They will call back tomorrow after investigating further. If they can’t get it working I’ll get Noel Leeming to swap it for another.

Did you manage to solve this, on my device its doing the same thing, can't get it to pair (took out batteries, reset it, etc...) - wonder if its a software bug?

Not yet. Tech support called last night for more fault diagnosis. No resolution. They are referring to developers. They are going to call again today to advise where this is at. My intention is to return the box tomorrow if not resolved today. The support team have said that they want the box to do testing on.

I made the mistake of resetting my remote and it unpaired from the STB, and only operated via IR. I had to fully reset the STB to factory and then when prompted to pair, I had to remove the batteries from the remote, put them back in and holding the yellow + 3 buttons until the red light started flashing. I held the remote right next to the STB and it worked in the end. Painful though.

I've posted a few questions over on the Vodafone Community, but if anyone here can answer, that'd be great. I've removed the ones already answered in this thread.

I bought the latest Gen2 Vodafone TV the other day and have been exploring it, but come across a few issues and quirks. Has anyone else experienced these?

Issues:

  • If a show/movie is paused on Lightbox for a considerable length (30+ mins), resuming the show does not deliver any audio. Even when exiting that app, live TV and other apps have no sound until the unit is rebooted.
  • When in the main menu, I select Continue Judge Judy, and Tagata Pasifika appears. This also happens when I search for Judge Judy in the guide. See video example here. When I try to record Judge Judy, Tagata Pasifika also shows in scheduled recordings.
  • The sound effects on the YouTube app are distorted when moving between menu items. Compare this to a Smart TV and you will be able to notice that they are considerably different, with VTV sounding terrible.

Quirks/Questions:

  • The remote appears to have an inbuilt microphone (and button to match), but this just opens the search for me to type. Will this have voice search in the future?
  • The box doesn't appear to have automatic standby - is that planned?
  • I've noticed when watching TVNZ 1 in Auckland, I am getting ads for Christchurch-based businesses, so it seems like I am getting a Christchurch feed with local ads.

It would be in Vodafone's interest because they could then sell it as working like a true DVR and being able to record 100% of programs rather than the 90% at present which is really less than 50% on some channels. It is annoying that I have to keep mySky to record the other 10%, also the record time could be longer than 3 days for some programs which is also highly annoying.

So basically it would increase their sales and provide a far better service to their customers like for the company in Singapore.

It would also mean that they would not have to negotiate recording rights continually on a program by program basis.

Brought Vodafone TV today. Main negative is not being able to record everything, but other then that it has some massive advantages as well.

I didn’t do anything to pair remote, it just paired itself. Wifi is 5Ghz only, working good getting 6074kbps on TV1 RWC replay, looks like picture is being upscale, and if wanted to can restart from beginning.

Program missed on Prime last night, but can watch it on 3 day catch up. Be nice being able to watch catchup at broadcast quality.

Movies on TV2 tonight cannot be recorded but one on TV3 can, seems most weekly programs won’t record on three :(

Until the recording restrictions are sorted will still need to keep MySky, which costs me $19 a box without Startup.

I haven’t tried fast forwarding yet to see what that’s like.

Question are there any applications I can download to iPad to connect to account. I tried two Vodafone ones one Vodafone TV, it wouldn’t accept name and password, and I tried a guide one which allows remote recordings, but couldn’t find the device number any where to do the pairing with.

i tried the Vodafone home account number but it didn’t accept that.

The app doesn’t support the new Vodafone TV STB. Support coming soon.

Given that litigation would likely cost several hundred thousand dollars in direct cost I don't think they'll sell enough extra units to make it worthwhile. They will also potentially cause problems with other content partners. The maths says it doesn't make sense.

Vodafone isn't a charity, they would need so sell at least ten thousands of extra units for it to be worth the investment. I can't see that happening.

I notice we can cast from youtube to the device. It would be nice if it supported DLNA so we can cast videos, images , music streams etc from other devices.

Which other countrys are using the same or similar device  for "vodafone tv" I can see from google it appears to be used in Spain , Ireland , Italy?

What apps do they have on theirs?

The remote for my Vodafone TV Remote for the Gen 2 Retail Box doesn't appear to work 2 mornings out of 3 until I unplug the box from the power and then re pair the Bluetooth. Is this normal or a bug and how can I avoid this happening?

Also last night the replay within 3 days option when replaying the One News would only fast forward to a single point in time which had passed up to half an hour before, even if fast forwarded from a time ahead of that. In which case it would go back to that time. This I believe is a bug.
