quickymart: Does Telstra Clear offer a non-T-Box cable TV solution? Can you still get the older (analogue?) set top boxes, or are they history now?
I used to have one, and I tells ya, solid as a rock. None of this weekly rebooting carry-on needed either.

Hi There,
we do. Please find information here:

One other thing I'd like to be able to do is play some programs to my DVD player (with built in hard drive) so I can record them to that (like I used to before I got the T-box). This would free up some space as shows I'd like to keep can be moved. My DVD recorder tells me that the programme can't be recorded as it has copy protection. This never happened with the old set-top-box.
Cheers

You may want to edit the hyperlink - it's to your web mail. It should be http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/residential/inhome/tv/tv-with-sky.cfm rather than https://staffmail.telstraclear.co.nz/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/residential/inhome/tv/tv-with-sky.cfm

I endorse those remarks. We had no trouble with the old digital decoder. In my opinion all these problems are fixeable with decent programming.? The t/box does have advantages and I guess eventually all will be well.?

If you're connecting via HDMI then HDCP will stop you, it's a feature of your DVD Recorder rather than an advantage the old SD STB had over the TBox.  Content shifting is something that all provider boxes want to stop since the content should only be within the box itself.  Can't put anything into it apart from via the approved channel, can't take anything out.

But then we hear customers cry what happens when the box blows up and gets replaced... Well you're SOL. :(

Hence why people who want to content shift build their own HTPC PVR's or go down the Dreambox or similar grey market boxes.  You will never see these features supported in the boxes themselves.

i thought you could only do this with sky satelite tv services as it is one way transmission.

Hence we dont have this option for Telstra TV transmissions as they would know instantly and disconnect the service??

I think if I was to get Telstra Clear cable again I'd go for the non-T-Box option.
Thanks for the link Tim, although oddly enough the "Digital TV" option you linked to doesn't seem to be an option when you go to pick your package?

I ran my DM500C for 3+ years on the old "Digital TV" with the TCL Smartcard in my box without an issue, plus it has a Component out rather than the rubbish Composite.. So the Picture Quality was way better.  Yes it's against TCLs T&C's to connect anything other than their own gear to the HFC network.  But it worked fine for me and I never had a call from anyone at TCL.  Then I got MySky as I got the half price deal for Sky.

Very interesting BarTender.

Kind of wish I hadnt upgraded to TBox now (not that i have any issues with T-Box) if I had of know that option was available. After reading all the instructions for doing this on geeksone with Sky hence why I though you could do this with Telstra.

It is a great solution to reduce lounge clutter of gadgets connected to the TV and home network.

I suppose when my obligation for T-Box runs out - the UFB should be installed in Wellington and this will be be a good time to reassess options

Cheers

All of our old problems are rearing their ugly heads again. Recording failed the other night due to "scheduling conflict" when there was none. Yesterday we had a partial recording due to the T-box powering off and of course when I went to watch TV we had the black screen of doom so had to turn it off. Same old, same old really.

Why when T-Box is TC's take on MySky or Tivo, did they not look more carefully at what Sky and Tivo did well and what they did not so well before realeasing thier own version?  I mean from the time they released MySky / Tivo till the time TC annouced the release of T-Box, would have given them ample time but given the time then to actually release it (T-Box) it would have given them even more than enough time to iron out any bugs, escpecially since the release date got moved out an out.

I could not say if it is a hardware problem or a software problem, but given there has been numerous box replacements for disgruntled subscribers and they continue to have issues, that it would not be a hardware problem unless thier was a batch issue.  It sounds like a software issue, we have had one release since i got T-Box and it has not made a difference to anything i had going on with T-Box that i did not like, how about a proper release and fix it up.

My gripe issues are as follows, and i would be interested to know if i am on my own or if they are shared by others out there;

1. the response time is slow, from when you push a button, to when it happens

2. no matter what channel you leave it on at night, whn you wake up it is on channel one, this is annoying as i leave it set for the kids, but they dont watch channel one, this occured after the recent software upgrade

3. you enter a channel number it shows then you get black screen, then you get the banner, then you get black screen then comes the programme.

4. occasionally there comes a need to re-boot as it freezes, and a reboot takes like 15 minutes!

possibly would not have got T-Box free or not if i had known about these.

TC and others feedback welcome.

Good list Jason.

I noticed for the first time this morning that the system was on TV1 even though I know I left it on 030 last night. Personally, I don't see that as more than a possible annoyance, but I don't use my T-Box the seta ame way you do.

I have seen a beta release (of the software for the T-Box) that does seem to have improved the responsiveness of the button pushing, and the channel changing. Pretty sure that is not going to happen though until after the RWC.

Heh. I recall that my old-school digital decoder was always defaulting to the religious channel. I eventually contacted Customer Service and they assured me they didn't do anything to make that happen. It was clearly divine intervention.
