This is just getting stupid...

I bought myself a PSP and had to have 4 goes at downloading the latest update to it... I just want to use my Internet connection g*d damn it.

EDIT: I don't care if something is coming sometime that might automagically cure cancer, I just want what I pay for, now, like I used to have.

And no this isn't trolling, it's moaning :)

We have now had at least 3 posts of people reporting ADSL2+ speeds. Neither of the 3 occurred at the same time, it must be rolling out over a few days. For myself it did not happen with a reboot but definitely about half a day after the first person reported it.

I know it is 7:30 in the morning and everyone is probably still dreaming about the V8's, but I've just been on You Tube (don't normally go there) and it appears that their solution to the problem is exactly what was implemented at my work. The first couple of MB download really fast and then it gets throttled back. This means the first 1 minute of video buffers extremely fast and the remainder buffers slightly faster than viewing speed and you do not get any hiccups. This works really well at my work, and it appears that WxC has also implemented this.

I have noticed this for the past couple of months. See my post at the end of page 4 of this thread for me mentioning it.

I was on You Tube a couple of days ago and the buffer would be insufficient within a couple of seconds, but now it will buffer about a minute of video within 5 seronds and then sharply slow down. It starts off super fast and sharply steps to a slow speed. It works very well. This has happened on my connection within the last couple of days. It does not start off slow and then goes slower, it starts off super fast.

It's the same thing, just scaled based upon the quantity of bandwidth available.

Okay, right now mine needs buffering as well but only a little bit. Sydney dropped to 1.5Mbps but LA is still almost 7Mbps. This morning I was getting over 8Mbps to XNet (which is not possible under ADSL1).

I won't get too excited now, there is no official announcement yet, starting to realise WXC is 'Very Different' usually new product releases and other enhancements to products and services happens with the big bang, i.e. - big advertisement etc.

...usually preceded with trial runs (unless you want a disaster like we have seen with some other ISPs...). They are probably trialling different methods on some customers without telling anyone about it, which would be easier to monitor for customers on static IP like myself.

Yea, I should admit tonight I have updated few websites hosted in the US without any disconnection. This is after 5 weeks I could upload to my web servers in the US. Usually I get frustrated and have to patch it through TCNZ broadband.

Interesting - a colleague and I have been experimenting with this in the lab for a few months[1]. Using reasonably deep queues per subscriber (say 4-5MB), with a quick drain rate but a slow refill rate. Allows the queue to fill up quickly, and drain out to the subscriber at up to line rate, but the refill rate is slow.

It gives a nice feeling of performance for web browsing/flickr/youtube type apps, but it doesn't allow bandwidth hogging in a bulk transfer environment. Works quite nicely as a bandwidth smoothing mechanism, but it relies on having very big buffers available on the BRAS. We were playing with it as an alternative to throttle-on-cap approaches.

[1] Not saying WxC is doing this; but it's interesting if they are...

It is definately what I saw on Sunday morning. Any chance it was You Tube doing it? At work we get a buffer of about 500k or so :-(

It certainly doesn't do this buffering for me. Just the same halt-run-halt-run-halt.... till you give up.

Yahn: I see that SNAP Internet is doing a Full Speed unlimited download at night and 128k during the day plan for $40. Maybe Xnet will try something similar for the leeches

An all you can eat account ? May be a huge buffet of stodge :)
I will wait a while and see what Xnet offer. Might be limited supper, but a free breakfast.
Pity can not have 2 different ISPs at once. Like and respect Xnet.
