DonGould: ya, I saw the links you posted in google too...? I looked at a few and they looked wrong to me, so I looked up the RFC error messages and not random faq doc written by ISPs (yahoo) who are know to often write wrong stuff in their FAQ's.

Point of note - what you posted wasn't from an RFC either. take a look at RFC1893, and you'll see that there are many and varied responses that fit within a 452. One such response is "Over quota", or "Mailbox full" like you indicate, but in this scenario, it has been munged a little to mean "Too many recipients this hour". See Symantec's explanation of this particular error.

452 has a long history of being abused to mean something different by spam and UCE blocking systems, as it has suitably generic subcodes that largely seem to describe the deferral. Which, I'll point out is what's actually happening. A 4xx code in SMTP ultimately means "no, not now, go away and try later", not "bog off, I'll never accept that" - that's 5xx.

Anyway, OP doesn't care anymore, he came for the soapbox, and got the usual response. so, I don't care anymore either.

Just when I was about to say... Yahoo email hold issues? I had a pizza hut one show up yesterday with fathersday specials, that was sent Friday morning. Could be bombarding clear and it grabs all from @xtra and goes 'not right now all at once you don't'?

Cheers for that.

I've also noted that some providers take a long time to clear mail queues as well.  xtra can be very slow, which is where the OP was sending from.

From time to time the NOG list fills up with complaints about how long it takes some of these bigger providers to accept mail.

I know that xtra/yahoo also manage the number of messages that the senders smtp server can throw at it as well.  I've had issues with yahoo blocking me out for a few hours when I've tried to send to much at it at once.

This blocking also impacted all traffic to xtra/yahoo for me, not just messages from the offending user.

For all we know, some random xtra user has caused a flood of mail to clear.net.nz and has caused the server to slow traffic....

Which is why Gary's post was on the mark.

You're right, the user did just want a soap box.

SMTP 452: Requested action not taken: insufficient system storage

I don't think the OP understands that the mail headers have to come from the person receiving the delayed email, his friend, not him.

He's jumped onto his soapbox, had his rant, so is presumably happy right now.

Clearly all he wanted was a rant, and not a solution - because if he did he would have at least provided key information (ie SMTP headers) that were requested by a number of people eager to help that wold have potentially explained very clearly what the issue probably is/was.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH95876

ya per the link above, the mail headers aren't going to tell you anything in this case other than the message delay if it gets delivered.

In this case, there's just to much traffic from xtra to telstra.

I can understand why the users never had this problem while the recv was with Snap.  I'd guess that Snap just don't get as much mail from yahoo.

Really the fault is with the OP.  He should change ISP and the problem goes away.

The Xtra guys have been trying hard for ages to push customers off their network, but people just insist on staying.

Did you see the article in Stuff the other day with xtra being quoted as saying they can't assure email stability.

Not that anyone else is any better in that regard, but they're not even attempting to colour it up to keep customers.

I figured headers would tell us where the messages were being queued, that would confirm xtra queuing until telstra can accept it.

That's all a bit obvious really isn't it?

When the message gets to his Telstra mate, his mate would be able to see how long it queued at Yahoo for, but by that stage will either of them care?

The reality here is that the OP should just join TelstraClear and then the problem just goes away.

Not really, not until seeing the actual headers, and the text of the error.

Just occurred to me that the messages OP are seeing are just the deferral notices, not bounces.

That's right, band-aid it. The better solution (and less disruptive to boot), would be to abandon the ISPs email service, and use something like gmail.

One would wonder why you've pushed TC twice in the thread Don..

edit: well, only once.. sorry, but twice to change ISP.

Tell your mate to:

1: Signup for a gmail account
2: Send an email from the gmail account to all his mates saying this is his new email address
3: Setup the gmail mail fetcher to pull email in from the clear address (in case people still send to it)

Problem solved.

Self interest - more customers at TCL mean a better chance of me getting better value on my HFC service.

Edit:  and it solves the problem for the OP at the same time.... so double win.

Alternatively everyone should leave Telstraclear and the business can die in a fire Tongue Out

...or why doesn't the OP just sign up for a gmail account?

Does Gmail have problems pushing mail at TCL?

Getting way off topic... but we've had this conversation and I'm still waiting to hear how anyone else is going to get me a decent service here?

They should both sign up for high quality email that's independent of their current ISP (gmail, windows live/outlook.com etc etc).

I would challenge them to go further and learn how to register their own domains, setup dns records and choose an email provider but most people don't like learning new things and are lazy.
