Are you running this against the Vodafone server? What router are you using? Are you doing this over WiFi?

There's something wrong with your network when you get 75mpbs out of the on-net speedtest, and 110mbps out of the competitor's...

TNZ: 110.54/9.75/43ms
VF: 75.94/9.04/not done.

Still, pretty damn sweet.

I am getting 127 from telecom test as well...so it does seem to be a Vodafone issue.

I get 127mbit/s on the telstraclear/Christchurch speed test server until my router has a tantrum and limits me to about 50mbit/s until I reset it.

I've almost always been able to achieve the top line speed.

Does the cable network in chch travel back to the old Telstra clear building on cashel/barbadoes st? If so I'm probably only a km or so away.

On a semi related note, are Vodafone offering routers with cable yet? TCL always said "bugger off, 1 PC only, no router, configure your own but unsupported yada yada"

Be nice if Vodafone offered routers these days (even better yet if they were UFB ready as well)

It's an hFc network. So your coax travels back to a fibre feed head end.

The way I see this, there's a whole bunch of different issues here that everyone has to keep in mind.

Routers

While my router has 1Gb interfaces on it, it will still only process a limited number of packets per second. The CPU in the router can be a limiting factor.

Computer Interface

The eth port on your computer might be 1Gb, but that doesn't mean the chip set behind it will actually process 1Gbit.

Wireless

Some of us have put 300mbit .n routers in, so will be wondering what's going on. You have to consider what trasmission speeds you're actually getting based on the amount of frequency space you have and the amount of power the radios are working at.

If you've got a bunch of other access points (ie your neighbours) all hammering away on the same channel that you're using, then stuff slows down.

Some people will say "but hey, I'm sitting right next to my router!"... great, so that manes you're saturating your device and the signal level is to high.

MTU/MTR

What's the MTR/U on your network and is your router having to fragment packets?

Concurrent Connections

How many active connections is your router currently managing? If you've got p2p applications open (not even moving a volume of data) on another computer on your network, it could be holding active connections open on your router. This adds load and can slow the routers performance.

Speedtest Users / Other Server users

Do we actually know what those speed tests are running on? Do we know how many people are concurrently doing tests? Do we know what else is running on the speed test server?

Some of you are talking about network performance, but is it just a lack of resource on the speed test server that's the issue?

Variables?

Obviously my point is that there's so many variables in this space that it really is a bit unfair to bash folk on performance, even if we have been through stuff with a fine tooth comb.

So why bother?!?!?

We moan when providers don't keep upgrading stuff, we moan when they do... does anyone start to understand why tech people go fishing, finish at 5pm and say 'tough luck that your service is off line till Monday..."?

To me, 130 mbit is as much about marketing and driving the CPE market, which I think is fantastic!!!

How many folk will be off to buy an upgrade to some of their kit so they can get a little more advantage?

How many will now buy a 1Gb switch rather than a 100mbit switch?

Is 100mbit 100mbit?!

How many people understand that Vodafone is delivering 130mbit at layer 3 and don't understand that's actually more data (faster) than 130mbit at layer 2?

How many folk saw 100mbit cable and thought that a 100mbit layer 2 router/switch would be good enough?

At 130mbit, it means people might actually buy a 1Gbit switch and router rather than 100mbit and actually get some decent performance.

/random thoughts on 130mbit.

This was just about the best result I could get.

Interestingly, and proving my point in the post above, this was to the Wellington server, which was quicker in download speed for me, than the Christchurch one.

The ping time I get to the chch server is 6ms, 4ms faster than the wgtn server though.

The best speed I got was around 120mbit.

Latency: 23 ms

Yes I believe they do offer netcomm routers to plug into your cable modem. Best to ring and ask though.

I dont have a direct computer connection to my modem or router (they are in the attic and I dont have a laptop) but I seem to get very wide speed variations depending on time of day etc. This morning I was getting 50+ Mbs easy via wifi (2.4ghz N) off wellington telstra speedtest, however sometimes in the evenings it drops to as low as 7 Mbs ! I cant believe its band interference because I get the same when I run a 5ghz N test from my ipad.

Is this kind of speed variation normal / reasonable? Certainly not getting my 130, or even 100, or even the 50 my router can deliver via wifi (yes, I am thinking about running cat 6 through the house).

My router is a netgear r6300, so should be well capable in this area.

Yes with 130mbit, it's quite possible that the back haul from the node is getting congested if everyone is spanking it at once and they're only running 1Gbit fibre back haul.

However you really haven't narrowed this down at all so telling the techs would just be a waste of time.

You really do need to get a cable so you can 100% prove out the wifi at different times of day.

Those speedtest applications really aren't a good measure at all. I get different results depending on the web browser, how many other apps I've got open at the time and how long the browser has been open. Some seem to have memory issues and performance just differs.

As for your 5ghz wifi, yes I should know more about that, but the first obvious question is how much noise is in the frequency space. If someone like Cryil7 s about, perhaps he can explain wifi in that space to us a bit better?

Once you've done a proper cable isolation test it might be worth sending the vf team a pm and asking if they can have a closer look at congestion on your data path.

I'm not seeing the sort of issues you're talking about, but then I'm also not really hammering it.

I also wonder what else is running on that server that's doing the speed tests. Where is the real bottle neck here?

Personally I think that's a shocking idea to have the telco sending out routers on this stuff.

Really if you want your wifi to work properly then you really really really need to put in gear based on what your house needs.

In my 100sqm property, I have 3 Unifi radios. A single wifi AP anywhere in the house would make having 15/2 pointless.

Well that's bit depressing. I used to get 99Mb/s with the Telstraclear speed test page. I saw this thread and I thought I'd try this new fangled 130Mb/s thing. I now can't top 80Mb/s... using the old page, or snap via speedtest.net. I haven't tested the connection for while.
I purchased the Linksys E4200 specifically for the 100Mb/s connection and it has always done me well, so I'm not pointing the finger at the router. Router and cable modem have been rebooted. Everything being tested over wired Ethernet at 1Gb/s. PC->switch->router->modem all negotiated at 1Gb/s. Is there a new speed test server I should be using? Anyone else having the same issues, I am on cable in the Hutt. If it was a new setup I'd plug the PC straight into the modem, but this is a tried and true config.

So what's this speed update really about then?

My tin foil hat started to run hot when I read about the slanging match that's broken out between VF and TNZ.

Seems to me that UFB delivers 150mbit of value while cable delivers 140mbit of value.

I think the way we should be comparing this stuff is actually adding the up and download and then factoring the included data allowance.

So what does Telecom cost for 500mb and 150mbits v's VF for the same?

I have to confess... I just laughed when I saw the stuff article Tom wrote... "Oh, I see the TCL marketing team has found a new home!!! hello..." ;)

Frustrating thing for me is I cant up the data from the 150 we consistently go over as I am in the middle of rebuilding post earthquakes and moving to UFB area which means no cable. So no point in signing a 12 month contract even tho new house is not ready before next year.

12g overnight game update and this month is now stuffed as well. I really am to the point with the stupid cable data caps of ditching the whole bundle sky/cable/phone (over $300 per month) and moving to someones free install and sky. The caps our now so out of touch with the whole market.
